Trochanteric bursitis

I’ve been diagnosed with Trochanteric Bursitis today at rheumatology. Given a steroid injection into my hip which was pretty painful and referred to a hip surgeon. They’re also checking my MRI from March again as they only looked at the inflammation in my thighs not my pelvis/hips.

Finally I’m getting treatment after suffering way over a year. The consultant was great. However I’m concerned as to what’s caused this. After researching it thyroid disease could be the cause which would make sense.

Has anyone else suffered with this?

I have suffered with bursitis in both hips for a number of years and it can be quite painful, also have had injections when needed. But had now idea having a thyroid problem meant I was more likely to suffer from it.

Hope the injection helps you. Good luck.

I’ve heard it can wear off quite quickly if I’m lucky 4-6 weeks but you can only have them 3 times a year.

Did you find out what caused it? They said the hip surgeon will arrange another mri but it’s worrying as I’m only 45 :(

Hi you asked what I think caused it. I’m not certain but it was at the same time as my lower back started to play up, without going into details the s.i. Joints became painful and the bursitis started. I see a sports therapist on a regular basis as my muscles don’t behave as they should. She does Mia faschia release and for a while now she has been treating both Bursers as and when needed, this combined with some ultrasound has has allowed me not having to rely on injections. In fact last week she told me of a patient of hers that had been totally neglected by her doctors and could hardly get out of the house. She is now walking again, has a way to go but this treatment is helping her too. So it might be worth looking into.

That sounds positive! I’m still in pain and discomfort but only had the injection 2 days ago. The pain is more bearable but my hip lower back and legs feel very uncomfortable and don’t feel right. I think it is my hip I did have early signs of osteoporosis a few years back. Just hope it’s not wear and tear :(

I’m glad your getting better fingers crossed the waiting list isn’t too long to see the hip surgeon x

I have osteoporosis, wear and tear and maybe more but at the moment I’m trying to stear clear of the specialists. All they want to do is give heavy duty meds which I can’t cope with. I’m taking d3 etc hoping to help the osteoporosis, due for a DEXA scan soon. As I mentioned my bursar seems to be triggered by my lower back issues could yours be too?

A physio or osteopath etc maybe worth a visit. Just a thought!

This is really interesting! I've been experiencing hip pain at night when lying and sleeping on my side. I've experienced it for around 6 months but only on and off, and haven't queried it with my GP as I'm busy trying to get my thyroid and asthma sorted out, and didn't want to throw another issue into the mix. Our thyroids really do cause all sorts of issues don't they.

Fingers crossed the steroid injection helps you. Will you need to go for regular injections?

Definitely raise it with your gp don’t leave it as mine has got so painful and can affect mobility long term.

I think many just don’t acknowledge that our thyroid affects every cell and organ in our body. My body has taken a battering and I sound like a hypochondriac.

You can only have 3 injections a year sometimes you need one sometimes ongoing. Just depends on the cause. My problem is it’s gone untreated and got worse over the last 2 years so not sure just how bad it is until I see the surgeon.

So please don’t delay get it checked out :)

Ah, thanks for the information. Sounds like it's something I should get checked out... will definitely speak to my GP about it. Hope all goes well when you see the surgeon and you don't have any more serious issues!

I have had Bursitis of the Trochanter for many a year and for the last few years have needed a stick for walking at times. Magically this year it disappeared - now struggling with painful ankles. My Mum always said - a movable pain was a curable pain !

I have been using OsmoPatches from Oz - ordered through a UK company. Website available. I really feel they have helped to draw out the inflammation on the Trochanter. I pop them on at night and remove in the morning. Have to wear leggings to hold it in place !

Earlier this year I had x-rays and saw an Orthapaedic Surgeon - who on looking at all my MRI's Scans - X-rays for the last 10 years confirmed I have Femoral Acetabular Impingement - and he agreed with me the surgery for it is a money making enterprise in the US. I have had spinal de-compression surgery and also the Tensor Fascia Latte has been opened up and pinned back ! - some 11 years ago !

When I mentioned that I have Crohns and Hashimotos he put his head in his hands :-) So in my case it is possibly caused by all the inflammation going on - which I do my best to calm ... I have been swimming daily all summer - so good to feel free in the water.

I would also check out exercises for the muscles of the butt - especially the Gluteus Medius - the butt muscles glide over the bursae of the Greater Trochanter so if the muscles are tight they can cause a friction leading to pain and inflammation ...

Hope all goes well for you ...

MissFG how did they diagnose this for you? I had a really bad episode back in March the pain was so bad in my hip walking made me cry. It never fully went away and there are days when it flares up and then starts to affect my back. I put it down to age I’m 53 I was having so many tests for my thyroid I didn’t want to plague the GP in case I was seen as a hypochondriac. Sorry for the late post I’ve only just seen it.

It’s been a long process as I’ve had problems with my thighs and climbing stairs etc for over two years.

It was first put down to fatigue from hashimotos. Then after constant composing to my rheumatologist they ordered an MRI which showed inflammation in my abductor muscles in my thighs. So I got a diagnosis of focal myosotis which is quite rare. I had a follow up MRI requested by a specialist and the inflammation was gone. So no further treatment.

I’ve still been having issues and not the pain had spread to my hip and groin. So I had to wait to my next rheumy appt where he examined me and confirmed bursitis which was what I thought after researching it. But obviously the bursitis and repeated inflammation in my thighs is caused by a bigger problem - probably to do with my hip. So I had an injection in today my hip joint and have a referral to a hip surgeon at the end of November.

If you have pain in your groin that goes round into your buttock. And a painful area on the outside of your hip - a sign of this is that you can’t sleep on that side. These are symptoms of bursitis.

It can happen at any age I’m only 45. I do think my hashimotos is the cause initially as I don’t think my body has got the nutrients it’s needed for many years before I got a diagnosis and treatment. I’ve been sick for a long time with my health declining.

I did have a pelvis scan about 5 years ago due to a number of years on the depo. This showed early signs of osteoporosis so that could also be the underlying issue for the bursitis. But until I see a specialist I’m taking painkillers just gabapentin as I can’t tolerate tramadol or codeine and using a tens machine.
