Lifeback, I think bursitis is co-incidental rather than due to thyroid. There are treatment suggestions in the link below.

Causes of greater trochanteric pain syndrome include:

An injury such as a fall on to the side of your hip area.

Repetitive movements involving your hip area, such as excessive running or walking.

Prolonged or excessive pressure to your hip area (for example, sitting in bucket car seats may aggravate the problem).

Some infections (for example, tuberculosis) and some diseases (for example, gout and arthritis) can be associated with an inflamed fluid-filled sac (bursa).

The presence of surgical wire, implants or scar tissue in the hip area (for example, after hip surgery).

Having a difference in your leg length.

Hi

I have right hip bursitis in bed, I wake up with really bad pain and have to turn into different positions until it eases. It started shortly after I was diagnosed with hypo.

Whether it is to do with hypo. or just coincidence it started then I do not know.

Sorry cannot be of more help.

Best wishes browny

I'm not aware of a connection. I first developed bursitis in my hips several years ago as a result of abnormal pressure. I have to sleep in a chair in a strained position because of a breathing problem and that is how it developed. It took months for the pain and inflammation to subside. It has never really gone completely - it can still flare up because I still need to sleep sitting up. Do you have any of the aggravating factors Clutter has listed?

You have my sympathy, the pain is horrible. xxx

Mine was caused by a fall last November, along with my shoulder. Finally had injections into hip & shoulder about a month ago and started physio yesterday. Injections made a big difference to my pain. Clemmie

Hi Lifeback

Mine was alleviated after starting NDT. All my musculature aches and pains have gone too - this is not imagination - it is such a relief to wake up not having to massage all my muscles to get going in the morning especially my previously chronically aching hips. The result is as if there is a pleasant layer under my skin protecting my hips from pressure when lying down but it is not like the bloating feeling I had while on Levothyroxine . What medication are you repliers on ? I truly feel I should have your name too as I am well on the way to getting mine back

Best wishes

This is my story Lifeback. About 23 years ago, I was in terrible pain in my left hip, I was diagnosed with bursitis, and given an injection in my G.P. surgery (I presume it was a steroid). A few weeks later the pain was back, it was excruciating, I was unable to bend down and take my shoes off, and I shuffled around wherever I went. My boyfriend massaged my leg which gave me a little bit of relief and that was the pattern. My life was a total misery. I was went to the hospital to see a consultant and had X-rays, was told it was definitely Bursitis and was admitted for injections in both hips (the other hip had started playing up too). A week or so later the pain was back. In desperation I went to see Dr. P and a Chiropractor in London. The Chiropractor looked at my X-rays and said there was no sign of Bursitis, and I believed him....In the meantime I started taking NAX under Dr. P. After a few weeks the pain went, I still don't know if it was the Chiropractor in London or the NAX, but I haven't ever had another twinge. So much for an NHS diagnosis. What I would say to you is get a second opinion, or maybe try NAX and see if it helps.

Good luck!

Margins - what is NAX?

ClaireandBosh, Nutri Adrenal Max. An adrenal supplement. You can get it here thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/go_sho... and it is available elsewhere.

Hi Lifeback. There is a connection between hypothyroid and hip bursitis. Read the causes here my.clevelandclinic.org/heal...

I suffered from severe hip bursitis for 10+years, had injections ( by the way the max you can receive is 3 in one joint) over 10 years with short-term relief, and then I was finally diagnosed with hashi's(which was probably going on undiagnosed for 10 years!) went on NDT, and wouldn't you know it? Bursitis is gone! Gone for the first time in 10 years! I had a hip ultrasound about a month after starting NDT (as it was so severe at the last ultrasound they recommended coming back for 3rd injection) and the radiologist couldn't believe the improvement. No trace on bursitis and I wasn't having any pain. This radiologist has seen a lot of my hip over 10 years and he was dumbfounded. He said he would take note of this for his chronic hip bursitis patients, so maybe some hope for some who haven't been diagnosed by their gp or endo.

If your having an episode of bursitis, maybe check your thyroid fx labs and see if dose needs to be raised? I had one incidence of bursitis since starting ndt, and a small raise fixed this. Hope you feel better soon. I know how terrible this kind of pain is.

Dear Lifeback,I have had experience of Bursitis in my shoulder. I had it for about 5 months, and inspite of phisiotherapy,it just got worse. Then, after I was diagnosed with P.A, I had 6 loading dosesof B12 (injections) ,and the shoulder got completely better. My doctoer said that it was coincidence. But I looked it up online, and lo and behold, some doctors in USA cure bursitis with B12 injections. So I can only suggest that you get some injections quickly. Your G.P. won't santion them. You can always get information on how to get B12 ampoules here if you decide to do this. I tell you it was miraculous how quickly it cleared up. B12 is water-soluble.Therefore absolutely safe.

All the best.

This is very interesting, Wedgewood. Since I have both conditions, I always wonder is it the NDT or B12 inj that are helping me with my orthopedic problems. Maybe it's both? Recently Had an episode of shoulder encapsulation and Calcific tendonitis in my shoulder(pain like I've never felt before) It had to be injected but even after, pain was so severe and couldn't move at all. I instinctively (or out of desperation) went to every other day injections, and guess what? Shoulder was healed in a week. Went in for an ultrasound where they were going to 'burst' the calcifications to prevent reoccurrence, and radiologist had nothing to burst. They were all nearly reabsorbed! He was dumbfounded, again. Told him about injections. 😄

Hi all thanks for replys I have has an x-ray came back with nothing wrong.docter examined me I nearly hit the ceiling problem is left hip and inside of that leg now the left inside is hurting I have to go back in two weeks if not gone I have to have injection but when I go back to endo I will see what they say about Levo I'm on 75 for 5 days and 50 weekends sick an tired of all this I haven't felt well for 5 years now will let you know what happens thanks for support x

in reply to Lifeback

Hi Lifeback. Xray can't properly show bursitis, so it can't be ruled out or diagnosed by xray. It's an ultrasound you need to diagnose bursitis. What's wrong with these people? 😡

I get this horribly in my right hip. Definitely a connection with hypo, because there's less blood volume the joints don't get enough blood supply. I know of people who have had their hip replaced because of this. Dr Skinner always took note of this hip pain as a reason to raise meds. I have a really cold area when I touch my hip which is worrying. I can go for months without the pain, then alter meds and back it comes, it makes it excruciating to walk sometimes. It's like we get neck and shoulder pain for the same reasons.

Could I just add that I have had many steroid injections into joints, even when I've refused them I've been over ruled. It has definitely affected my adrenal function which is now poor. I would question the need for them unless you are in agony. They may give you a few weeks of less pain but seldom cure the problem.

Here's another person who had both hips in pain the right was worse. X-rays showed bursitis in the right side. I did get 2 shots of cortisone in my right hip. I know that helped but truly being on the right dose of synthroid has taken it completely away. I wish you well xoxo Susita

Please do not think I expect you to get down on the floor and perform :-) The above link takes you to lots of other videos too - some of which explain the relationship between the Tensor Fascia Latta - the Greater Trochanter - the Piriformis. Bursitis - as the itis suggests is inflammation ....

The TFL is a huge tendon and when damaged or tight it rubs away on the Greater Trochanter on the outer part of the hip causing the bursitis. The pain is horrid. I had it for years and had surgery in 2007 here in Crete ! I had the TFL opened up and pinned back ( also had a benign tumour removed ) - this took the pressure off the GT. I also had spinal surgery later the same year for stenosis. I was hoping the TFl op would sort me out :-(

I now struggle with sciatica - more in the other leg :-( So yes I do have experience of doing several yoga asanas as I teach 2/3 times a week - and they do help the general flexibility and opening of the supporting muscles. It may seem a step too far - so on the advice of a Physio here I did something similar to the video in bed before putting my feet to the ground. Once the feet are on the floor without doing the stretch - the scene is set so to speak....any tightness will remain tight.

With regard to the thyroid connection - my thoughts are that as ALL muscles need T3 then it rings true that when levels are low then the muscles suffer - remain tight and unhealthy. A stretched muscle is a healthy muscle - and will then relax. We have more muscles than bones - it is the muscle system that keeps us upright :-)

Hope you soon feel better .....take it gently ...

I've had horrendously painful shoulder problems, including bursitis. I have had a lot of successful treatment for it, and manage OK with the low level pain that is constantly there, and am careful how I use/move my shoulder now. I did mention to my orthopaedic consultant that I had read about a link between shoulder issues and Hashimoto's - he wasn't aware of one, but certainly didn't dismiss it. He acknowledged that the thyroid affects just about everything in your body, so was prepared to accept what I said. I often suggest to non-endocrinologists I see that they should consider changing their speciality, they usually seem more aware of thyroid issues.

It worries me that I have bad pain in my hip too, and am still putting off visiting the GP about it. I think he will have a breakdown if I add any more health issues to the list :(

If it is actually the hip joint that is troubling you - then you will feel the pain in the groin. When it's on the outside of the pelvic rim then it could be the TFL inflaming the Greater Trochanter.... :-)

BeansMummy profile image
BeansMummy in reply to Marz

Gosh, Marz, I didn't know any of that. Mine definitely isn't in my groin, it feels like it is in the joint itself.

Time for my magnesium bath and a camomile tea I think ...

Marz profile image
Marz in reply to BeansMummy

...the joint is more in the groin - take a look at some pictures on-line. Have had a look but most do not have the outline of the body ....If you lie on the floor - put the soles of your feet together - bringing the heels towards you and drop the knees towards the floor. You can then walk your fingers with pressure through the groin and find the sore spots - you may even find where the femur connects with the pelvis - the hip joint.

Enjoy your magnesium bath and tea - sounds perfect... :-)
