Anyone tried ferrous gluconate tablets(by crescent) prescription use) 😕

Hi there guys I thought I would give you a little post😀 as you regulars know I've had abit of a problem with my iron defiencey, I've been taking floravital liquid with no probs but its not strong enough to rise my levels up, gP said to try ferrous fumerate, ferrous sulphate and cannot take either of these as they made me very sick and a lot of pain, so now on gluconate which are stronger and thought I may be OK on these as floravital is gluconate. I have been referred to GI now to see him if there is a problem with me not absorbing iron, I think gp knows after this next attempt I will be looking at a IV infusion, I also have a hiatul hernia which is upset by iron liquids and tablets. Anyone tried these tablets and been sort of OK??xx🙌

Ferrous fumarate 210mg contains 69mg iron per pill. Ferrous sulfate 300mg is only slightly less.

Ferrous gluconate 300mg has 35mg iron per pill.

It is the iron content of any iron supplement that (roughly speaking) determines how well people tolerate it, so theoretically ferrous gluconate should be easier to tolerate than either fumarate or sulfate.

I haven't actually tried ferrous gluconate myself. I managed to tolerate ferrous fumarate but not the sulfate (dunno why), however my absorption was very slow. I could only tolerate iron supplements with food. Taking them on an empty stomach was absolutely impossible.

I have a problem with iron too.....haven't tried them yet but found iron patches on Amazon (not sure if I can mention that!)

Info reads -

Ooh never heard of patches,!! Yes has to be gf and soya free for me, the only thing that puts me off are all the added fillers in prescription irons, floravital was great but it was just a maintenance dose and in the end I was spending at least £18every two weeks for 2 bottles to double the dose to see if that worked but its just too weak.😠 I think the next stage is iv.x

I’ve searched for iron patches before and couldn’t find anything which is why I asked for a link. Is it definitely against forum rules? Perhaps you could PM a link if it’s not too much trouble? 😊

Don’t worry found them! They contain a huge (and slightly concerning) amount of vitamin A. 🤔

Not criticising the product (I don't know anything about it!), but the sales blurb has some questionable details.

Quite possibly Iron Bisglycinate is a non-constipating form of iron when taken orally. I have always thought that the constipating effect of iron supplements is caused within the gut. Is this relevant for transdermal patches?

Interesting...iron remains a bit of a mystery to me, need to read more!

I don't have any experience of the patches either but they popped up (as things do!) when I was buying B12 patches. Just thought they might be of interest to Rmichelle ....iron supps cause havoc with me too.

I was thankful for DD's help but I was put off by the sales patter a little, thinking about it , it would not be strong enough to scrape my levels off the ground

I had a problem with iron too. Couldn’t tolerate gentle iron either. I was fine with iron years ago but not anymore. I found these slow release iron tablets (in USA) that don’t upset my tummy. I don’t know about the availability where you are, but you could see if you can order them online.
