Hi Cookie,

It takes a few weeks for the meds to start making a difference, but even then it is not a huge help due to the symptoms.

Have you asked about propanalol? It can be used to help treat symptoms such as tremors, sweats, palpitations and insomnia.

Hope this helps a little.

Hi and Welcome ! Do you know which anti-bodies were tested before your diagnosis ? Do you have Graves ? There have been a few cases lately on the forum where the correct anti- bodies have not been tested ... Hope you soon feel better.

Hi - I was diagnosed as hyper in 2015 and a little later as having Graves Disease. I was put on 40mg per day carbimozole and 10mg propranolol. I had awful insomnia - my life was upside down and I felt I would never sleep again. It took a while (at least three months) before the ultra high levels of hormone which had built up in my system started to lower and I was able to begin to establish a more normal sleep pattern. Do you get palpitations, racing heart or pounding in your head when you try to sleep? If so you should ask about propranolol in combination with carbimozole as it slows the heart (which goes into overdrive due to high thyroid hormone levels).

Carbimazole only inhibits production of new hormone, it doesn’t destroy existing stores, so it can take eight weeks or even longer for those to work through.

As others have said, a beta blocker will usually take the edge off some of the worst symptoms. However, achieving remission with Graves’ is a long haul - often at least a year.
