Hi

Mine was a few hours after eating it.

I went out to a tearoom and had a gluten free cake, I asked if it was definitely gluten free to which they said yes.

I got home and a few hours later my tummy was rumbling and I had terrible stomach pain.

I was bent over in pain, then the diarrhoea followed all night.

I have been gluten free since September 2017.

Best wishes

Hi peanut31,that's interesting.I brought non gluten cakes for my husband and ate 3of them why I don't know, just being greedy, the following day I'd run out of my gluten free spaghetti and had normal spaghetti. The following day I just didn't feel right.I didn't have stomach pains or diarrhea, just felt so tired and had a bad migraine.I did notice that my stomach was making some really weird noises.Well I certainly won't be doing that again, don't know why I did in the first place. Thanks for your reply.

There are times (not too many) that I've deliberately eaten gluten to see how I react.

Like Peanut, I get an upset tummy & diarrhoea. I also a headache and feel tired. This can happen to me about a couple of hours after eating it.

I can feel tired very quickly after inadvertently eating gluten, will get stomach issues a couple of hours later and then all my joints will ache horribly the next day and I will be fighting a low mood for 24-48 hours before it feels like it’s cleared out of my body. Hubby ordered a Thai takeaway on Saturday night for us when faced with my suggestion of a turmeric lentil bake (it didn’t take much persuading for me to agree!) but forgot to ask for mine to have tamari on rather than soy sauce. It was delicious but I definitely regretted eating it as I’m now only just feeling normal again. I haven’t been tested for gluten intolerance but know I must be sensitive. Have been GF for nearly 18 months.

It's horrible isn't it!!!I always assume that when I feel well it's ok to eat g/f sometimes,but I've realized now I can't and I won't,I've learnt my lesson.Thanks for reply.

I have bee gluten free since 2012 and in 2013 went out to lunch with a friend who was staying with me, I hadnt eaten out before and didnt think and ate chips three days running, on 3rd agternoon started to feel bad tummy ache etc and then the itching started, first my arms then back and trunk and back of thighs dermatologist said Id got a nasty case of Dermatitis Herpetiformis, in all it took a month to subside, only good thing was that Im now classed as Celiac without having to take biopsy which Id refused before. On another two occasions I have been given food with gluten by misrake and got symptoms same as Paula101 above, uncomfortable but definately preferable to DH.

Hi E_lizab8.I didn't know chips were bad,I thought they were classed as carbs, not that I ate to much carb.Hope your feeling better now.thankyou for replying.

Its not the chips its just that lots of restaurants use the oil that they cook chips in to fry other things that contain gluten eg breaded or battered items, thats why I didnt realise and got glutened. Some places now have a dedicated fryer just for chips but not all, either ask when ordering or order baked or boiled potatoes or extra veg instead. Nothing wrong with chips except the carbs as you said, sorry to confuse you. Yes thanks Im fine and a whole lot wiser re gluten now and not had DH again since then.

Hi E_lizab8.Sorry it did throw me a bit but I see what you mean.Im still trying to get my head around all this,my thyroid levels seem to be ok but there's times, like now when I feel dreadful.I did eat gluten last week, why I don't know, but I seem to feel so well for a couple of weeks, then I start to feel dreadful again.Im trying to educate myself with the thyroid and Hashi,s it's so complicated.

Most would typically get symptoms within a few hours, but it can take up to 3 days. Symptoms can be obscure too, such as rashes, headaches, joint pain. It's not always just gastro symptoms.

Hi cooper27.So how long can the symptoms last?

Everyone reacts differently. I've heard of people having symptoms for 3 weeks, but the majority would be back to normal within a week :)

Hi, here's a good resource, sorry if some of it is a bit medicalised - you mentioned it's difficult to get your head round. I have a coeliac husband and 2 gf daughters, plus I'm gf for my Hashi's, and we've been doing this for years, so it becomes second nature.

Also, take a look at the coeliac UK website and resources, they are really good. x
