I was wondering if low thyroid can effect the way other medicines work? If you have low thyroid and you notice other medicines acting different?

Can thyroid effect other medicines?
SollyOno
Are you taking thyroid meds? If so then there can be interactions with some other medication and they should be taken as far away from each other as possible.
If your thyroid status is optimal you shouldn't need too many other pharmaceuticals. I haven't read that thyroid hormone interferes with other medications but other meds can reduce the viability of thyroid hormone. Usually iron and calcium need four hours from your T4 or NDT.
Hi Heloise,
I appreciate this advice. Hopefully I can resolve the issue soon.

Solly, doctors notoriously prescribe antidepressants or other drugs to counteract symptoms which are really due to low thyroid and in my opinion only exacerbate the problems. Antidepressants interfere with your hormone so weaning off those as you introduce your T4 or NDT. Usually recommend changing the diet to include more fats and checking for gluten or dairy sensitivities and also avoid fluoride, bromides and chlorine which replaces iodine in your system. This can offer natural suggestions.
These doctors work WITH the body instead of against it.

Heloise, Thank you again! I am also about natural approaches to health care.
Hi Solly. Sent this to Heloise first by mistake so deleted and repeated!
Because low thyroid apparently lowers stomach acid levels, it's best to avoid antacids as much as possible, and especially medications such as Omeprazole (Proton pump inhibitors). And if I remember, someone here said that it IS helpful to take Vitamin C with the Levo (acid helps it to be absorbed).
If in doubt have a chat with the pharmacist, (take a list of any medications you take, including supplements, over the counter and herbal), no need to wait to see a doctor, and of course pharmacists specialise in medication and interactions
Jnetti,
Yes pharmacist are wonderful and know there pharmaceuticals. I am going to inquiry more into the Levothyroxine interactions with my other medicines.
