Travelling to Portugal with Erfa Thyroid/NDT. Do I need to take a Doctor's letter with me?

Hi All,

I'm travelling to Portugal very soon and taking my Erfa Thyroid (Natural Desiccated Thyroid) with me.

I've not yet travelled abroad whilst taking this and have previously been on NHS prescribed Levothyroxine. So I have obviously had a repeat prescription to take with me.

I've asked my Private Doctor's practice to give me a letter, but this has yet to materialise because their Secretary is off sick :-( Don't think it will be with me before I leave despite me asking for it 2 weeks ago.

Has anyone travelled with ND Thyroid without a Doctor's letter/Repeat Prescription? I don't want to get into trouble for travelling with unlicensed medication and it's worrying me. So much so I am thinking of asking my GP for Levothyroxine for the time I'm away.

Does anyone have any advice please? I'm fretting about what is best to do.

Thank you so much.

Hi, I travelled to Benidorm last year and was told to ask the receptionist at the doctors for a print out of my current medication and keep it with the tablets when I travelled. It wasn't needed but I had it with me just in case.

Do you have a letter from your consultation confirming your medication and dosage as I'm sure that would suffice. When you were prescribed armour did the consultant send a letter to your doctor confirming your medication. If consultant did write to your GP, your doctors receptionist may or may not include this on a print out of ypur medication. Just my thoughts, not sure if that helps as I'm sure you have already thought of this.

If unable to obtain confirmation, my thoughts are if you have your medication in the box they came in, do they have your details on. If you are only taking enough tablets for a holiday I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

Hi Essexmum. Thanks for your reply. I'm not prescribed it by my GP's so they can't give me a printout. Unfortunately, my Private Doctor has never written to my GP as the NHS frowns upon the use of NDT. He would've done had I asked him to, but I've kept them separate as the NHS is so anti anything other than Levothyroxine.

My tablets are labelled. If I can't get letter I will just have to chance it unfortunately.
