Test results

Hi. I have already posted a thread on the forum. I received my blood test results yesterday. And I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge into TSH levels, as they have come back abnormal. The doctor has told me I have an under active thyroid. Which I found impossible as I don’t have a thyroid. I had a TT in 2014!

Any help I would be grateful x

Does your Dr know you have no thyroid ! What he should have said is you are undermedicated.

Do you have the actual results ? What replacement are you taking and what dose ?

Yes the doctor knows I have no thyroid. I was taking 125mg levothyroxine. When I went to see him on Monday about my excessive weight gain and tiredness. He increased my levo to 150mg.

These are the results:

Serum TSH level: 22.24 miu/L (abnormal)

Serum Free T4 level: 12.8 pmol/L

You posted: Serum TSH level: 22.24 miu/L (abnormal), Serum Free T4 level: 12.8 pmol/L

Your levothyroxine is being increased to 150 mcg from 125 mcg. This increase is too little as you are still considerably undermedicated.

Perhaps the doctor didn't know you had a TT, they have so little time with patients they don't read the case notes. It's a bit academic anyway, what it means is that your thyroid hormone levels are too low. As our thyroid hormone levels (fT3 & fT4) fall the pituitary pumps out TSH to try and stimulate the thyroid (if we have one) to produce more hormone. When on levothyroxine our TSH needs to come down to around 1 or 2 (or even lower) before we do well. So your TSH is way too high.

You should take your levothyroxine on an empty stomach away from coffee, other medicines / supplements and large meals. It might be easier to take it at bedtime. You plan to take it when you wake up during the night but will you be able to remember if you've alreay taken it? Bedtime dosing is fine and easy.

If you don't start to feel better in a weeks time I would go back to the doctor and tell them you are not getting any better and that your TSH was very high and you don't think a 25 mcg increase is enough.

It would be helpful if you have any other blood test results you can post here.

Thankyou for your reply. The doctor knew I’d had a TT because I asked him to check what weight I was post TT from my consultants notes from my pre op. I’d discussed that I had never had my medication changed since they day of my surgery. He was fully aware. Just obviously not that interested!

What other results do you want to see? I have an online patient access that allows me to see my test results. I’m happy to look for the ones you would like to see. I’m new to all of this and don’t understand test results. So any other help would be appreciated

Really just need to see TSH, fT3, fT4 from previous tests so that we can see if your levels are stable or jumping around.

Have you recently changed brand of Levothyroxine? For example to Teva brand?

Different brands of Levothyroxine are not bio equivalent. The apparent identical dose can give very different results

What was your previous TSH on 125mcg Levo ?

How long since your TT ?

You also need vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested. These are often too low and can affect how Thyroid hormones work
