Hi all I had some bloods to check for thyroid a couple of months ago because of symptoms of fatigue and swollen thyroid. The results came back saying my thyroid wasn't right but I have just had new ones back saying I am in range.

Any support would be appreciated.

Thankyou

Yeah, i think its usually the lab protocol... if tsh is out of rabge, they then test t4. (Bit annoying!!)You can try asking your gp to specifically ask for t4, rather than just ‘thyroid function’.

Both tests done at the same time of day? What time of day were these tests done? Did you fast overnight? No FT4 for June?

Thankyou thyroid test in April done in the afternoon and not fasting, FT4 not tested in June because TSH was normal no action and was done in afternoon and not fasting

Well, they won't. It's a patient to patient tip which we don't discuss with doctors or phlebotomists.

The reason behind fasting (and that just means have your evening meal the night before the test, then only water until the blood draw, just delay breakfast until afterwards) is that it's possible that eating can lower TSH. When looking for a diagnosis of hypothyroidism, or to avoid a reduction in dose of Levo, or when looking for an increase in dose, then you want TSH as high as possible so we always advise booking the first appointment of the morning and delaying breakfast.

Also leave off Levo for 24 hours because if you take it before the blood draw then the FT4 result will reflect the dose of Levo recently taken rather than what is normally circulating in the blood.
