Dairy or No Dairy

Hello, just wondering what people's views are on excluding dairy from your diet if you have Hashimoto's and underactive thyroid? How does dairy negatively impact the thyroid? I cut out gluten and dairy some time ago, but have recently seen a nutritionist who has suggested good quality, unpasteurised, grass fed sheep and goats cheese, butter, yoghurt etc should be ok. I have had comprehensive stool testing done and which hasn't shown any allergies, intolerances, leaky gut etc. Although does indicate a few other things. I am on Levothyroxine and Liothyronine but has been a rocky year so far trying to balance things.

Would love to start incorporating a bit of dairy again, but scared to rock the boat.

Many thanks for any advice.

Anna

I'm not convinced that dairy has any bearing on the thyroid. It's just that some people don't get on with it. I agree with your nutritionist, sheep and goat dairy should be fine. Try it and see. :)

Thank you for this - really helpful. I will give it a try slowly reintroducing when I am in a less busy period at work!

Going 100% dairy free was a game changer for me. (I was 99% df before and 100% gluten free). There are loads of vegan products that are not soy based to give you a cheese, yoghurt, milk fix. But that's me, it might not be the same for you. I stopped having days long head aches, depression lifted and my bloating etc reduced. But again, that was me and I was doing other things healthwise at the same time. I think the theory is that if you've got leaky gut, that the dairy protein looks very similar to what triggers a Hashi's autoimmune response, so by going dairy free, you are reducing the trigger and letting your immune system calm down.

The only true test is an elimination diet and then bringing dairy back into your diet. You'll know soon enough if you are ok with it or not!

Thanks so much for this. I've got used to not eating it now. But may try a gentle introduction and see what happens. This thyroid journey is such a roller coaster so not sure whether to risk it, but we'll see!
