I wished I had been warned. A “hormone specialist” I was referred to for osteoporosis put me on HRT. She knew I was on lyvoxyl for hypothyroidism. Three weeks later I was crying, fatigued, confused, anxious to the point I could hardly function...the same feelings I experienced at age 35 when I was diagnosed. Now at 66, I am livid that this happened to me. Be warned...do not mix HRT and thyroid med. The HRT cancels the thyroid med. .....at least it did in me. I quit HRT and it took 3 weeks for my thyroid to be balanced again. Lesson learned!

HRT and lyvoxyl
I am sorry you had a bad experience and at first we believe doctors know what NOT to prescribe if hypo but find out they don't. I am glad your thyroid hormones are now in balance again.
Oestrogen interacts with levothyroxine and therefore your doc should have asked for check bloods and increased your dose accordingly. You should also have been advised to take the hrt 12 hours away from the levothyroxine. My menopausal symptoms were horrendous and hrt has given me my life back. I needed a small change in Levo and liothyronine dose, it took about 3 months to get stable.
I am sorry your experience was so bad, but I read as much as I could before I tackled the doc, from past experience not expectecting them to know very much. It is hard work taking responsibility for your own health.
There is nothing unusual about taking HRT with levothyroxine.
When introducing HRT the thyroxine levels should be adjusted as estrogen partially blocks the uptake of thyroxine and therefore an increase in thyroid meds is necessary.
Your doctor should have known this.
Taking estrogens transdermally ie. patches or estrogel, has less of an impact on thyroid levels.
Several mistakes on my part. I was not instructed , nor did I ask ,when to take the HRT, only two times a day. Second, I have been getting my lyvoxyl at the same pharmacy for many years, but the HRT ( bioidenticals) I had to get at another pharmacy. I did not mention lyvoxyl and the HRT pharmacy does not have a prescription chart on me like the other one .
In all fairness, I usually research everything and this time I did not until I started having negative symptoms. We all need to be advocates for our own health. We need to help medical professionals make good decisions. They care about their patients. Meds can help and they can hurt. Be wise.
