HRT and Levethyroxene: My doctor has suggested... - Thyroid UK
HRT and Levethyroxene
Whilst I was still in the relatively early stages of recovery from severe hypothyroidism, my GP prescribed a trial of oestrogen patches at the lowest dose of 25mcg. The plan was to add in progesterone later. We didn't get that far though. I stopped the trial after just a few days because of a really bad attack of vaginal thrush, which is a common side effect. I did try again a while later, with the same awful consequences!

Most of the symptoms I was experiencing, that my GP thought the HRT would help, did eventually resolve by themselves with time. With hindsight, I think being on an optimal dose of appropriate thyroid medication was the answer for me.
Hi Annamaria
I am 54 and been on HRT since I was 46, about a year after I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. First i took it in tablet form for a couple of years and now I have patches, which I prefer as it goes straight into the blood stream and does not have to by-pass the liver, where a lot of it is lost.
I am not saying I don't get some menopausal symptoms still, but it works for me. You have to give it time to work, and if the first one doesn't help you, then ask your gp can you try a different one, or alter the dose. You really have to persevere. There is a really good site called Menopause Matters, they are really friendly and you can get lots of advice from the forum, and there are folks on there who are hypothyroid too, its worth giving it a try.
Good Luck
