Itchy body and hypothyroidism

I am having itching all over my body followed by red rash. It keeps on itching all through the day periodically. Is it due to hypothyroidism and can I take skin allergy or medicine for it.

When my tsh is high I tend to have itching all over my body. Once it comes back down the itching stops.

You really need to find the cause of it. Check with pharmacist re taking antihistamines. They should be able to advise you.

I agree with neverending. I was over prescribed levothyroxine and had the worst itchy rash in my life! Piriton helped to a point. Then my itchy ankle swelled and popped and I developed a nasty oozing wound. The itch was insane! I went to A/E they gave me 2mg diazepam to take 3 times over 24 hrs. I slept and woke to far less itching.

Good luck.

What were your latest thyroid test results? You should seek advice from your doctor and a proper evaluation including kidney function unless there is an obvious allergy to a detergent, soap or cosmetic you are using.

There are many reasons (not necessarily thyroid related) why you might get intense itching - so it would be advised to speak to your GP.

Good luck. Hope you get it resolved soon.

Hello There, I had an itchy rash for over a year. It drove me mad, all the doc gave me was antihistamine. I kept hearing on here we should go gluten free, so I decided to give it a try. What do you know ? First my rash disappeared completely and I’ve been gluten free for five months now. I can honestly say I now feel better than I have for years. I’ve also stopped drinking fizzy drinks, now I only have water or herbal tea. This site has been magic giving really helpful information that you don’t get elsewhere. I’m very thankful to all you knowledgable people on this forum and the help you give.

Sounds like dermatitis herpetiformis (DH), which is the outward manifestation of Celiac. Not all people with Celiac have it, but for those of us that do; it is a misery.

Going gluten free, like Lulustep2malu said, is the only way to resolve it, if that is indeed what it is. It should disappear, though it can take quite awhile for some. If you are already gluten free, then it could be a change in fillers in any of your meds, including thyroid. Gluten is used quite often as a filler, unfortunately.

Every time I am accidentally glutened, even the smallest amount, the DH hits with a vengeance. It can take up to 3 months for it to calm down. It is bad news all the way around.

I have read research that says just one exposure to gluten activates the immune system for 3 months. So, eating it just 4 times would keep the immune system in flux for a year. That includes accidental glutenings. It's bad enough to just have Celiac, but when it affects your skin too, that is particularly cruel.

Give the gluten free diet a try. You don't have to have an Rx for it. As a matter of fact, that is the only treatment for it. There is no pill.

Hope you get everything squared away soon and find what helps you. All the best.

Oh my, and just once it responds that is horrible. I sure hope your friends and family understand, when having you over. My eating habits haven't been received graciously by many. Your made to feel very odd. I feel for you, however, your taking care of yourself, BRAVO👏

Thanks, Beachytoes. It can be quite the challenge sometimes, but I certainly try😊.....So true about the being made to feel very odd statement. It's too bad more people don't think about "the shoe being on the other foot" before forming their opinions.

Absolutely!! Well said, aren't we all different, in many ways and not perfect! However, gluten, no meat, different diets seem to be the thing, they weren't a few yrs ago, 🤔 we have to find our way, gosh, this site helps! Be well🐝🇱🇷
