Do you mean with a private test, with Medichecks or Blue Horizon? If so, the results are normally back 24-48 hours after they receive your sample.

If you mean with your GP then you won't get everything you need done.

So i should just get it all done privately? Will they do every single thyroid test at once?

They will do what you request them to do, you choose one of their tests, send the blood off and they report back.

A full thyroid panel includes:

TSH

Free T4

Free T3

(They also do total T4)

Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies

Thyroglobulin antibodies

and for very little more it's worth having vitamins and minerals tested:

Vit D

B12

Folate

Ferritin

They do all that in one test bundle. You can do a fingerprick test which requires 2 small vials of blood, each holding 0.8ml or you can opt for venous blood draw if you think you won't be able to manage the fingerprick test.

These are the tests

medichecks.com/thyroid-func... (check on a Thursday, it's sometimes reduced by £20)

bluehorizonmedicals.co.uk/t...

So in that test you linked it tests for everything you listed just now? Also i'm in Ireland so where is this company based?

Okay never mind i read that it does all of that lol. I'll discuss it with my GP tomorrow. I don't mind paying if it means i'll get results sooner. If i do this private test and it comes up positive for thyroid disfunction will i then be able to take the results to my gp so i can get treated?

Some GPs will accept private test results, some won't.

If you discuss the tests with your GP you will most likely be asked why you want to do them. You may be offered testing by your GP. Your GP, if he agrees to test will be able to do

TSH

The lab may do FT4, some won't do FT4 if TSH is in range

It wont do FT3

It won't do thyroid antibodies normally, it may do Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies at some point but no guarantee.

Your GP may agree to do the vitamin and mineral tests.

Why wouldn't they accept private results? A diagnosis is a diagnosis is it not? Would they not accept it on the basis that they think it isn't accurate or what?

Who can explain the workings of a doctor's mind?

Some have a god-like complex, they don't like to be questioned, it bruises their egos and their minds are closed.

They are taught that diagnosing is done by looking at numbers rather than listening to the patient and taking symptoms into account.

Some are willing to think outside the box, listen to their patients and work with them.

Some know the restrictions of the NHS and are willing to accept results of tests they can't get done.

If you do a private test, it is exactly that - a test. You are not employing them to diagnose you. If you want a diagnosis you would need to see a private doctor.

The private tests are accurate, they are carried out by accredited labs. But if a GP doesn't want to accept them, we can't force them to.

My GP seems like she would accept them as she was telling me that for one of the tests i listed out to her i would need to get it done privately. Would it be a lot faster for me to just but this test rather then waiting for my gp to get the thyroid panels done for me?

I don't know how long it would take to get the tests done with your GP if she agrees to do them all. But like I said, FT3 isn't likely to be done, nor the antibodies.

At my surgery, the GP gives you a slip to book a blood test. If you are lucky you may get an appointment in 2 week's time, you may have to wait longer. Once drawn, the blood goes at 12.30pm. Results back within 24-48 hours, GP has to see them before patient is allowed a print out. If blood draw is done in the afternoon then it is sent off the next day, so an extra day's wait for the results.

If you do a private test, you send the blood off the day you do the test, send it by Next Day Guaranteed Delivery, email within 24-48 hours after receipt of sample saying results available.

Sounds a lot more conveniant to get it done with medichecks. I'll ask my GP tomorrow if she will accept private tests. I don;t understand why they wouldn't? If someone gets positive for thyroid issues and it was done privately shouldn't the doctor still treat you for it. It's their job.

It depends on the GP in question. I do a full thyroid No 11 bloods test with blue horizon once a year and self medicate with NDT. I have no thyroid and this method works for me. Take the test first thing on an empty stomach.

I got my blood taken today. I asked her what tests she's doing and she said all the tests i listed out to her the last time i was there which was all the thyroid tests and vitamin tests you listed out just now.

Did they all get done last time?

I hope you get them all done this time and I will be pleasantly surprised if you do.

Did you have an early morning blood draw (no later than 9am) and water only, breakfast after blood draw? That will give the highest TSH which is needed for diagnosis.

I got the blood drawn today. She said it will take two weeks for the results to come back as she has to send the blood off to the lab. I fasted from like 7pm the night before and had the blood drawn at around 10am.

Where on earth is the lab? My thyroid results are always back within 24-48 hours, most other tests as well. The blood is drawn at the GP and goes to the main hospital 60 miles away for testing.

I don't know... it's very strange. I should of just bought a private testing.
