In the PubMed index of scientific and medical papers, the most recent reference to protein-bound iodine (PBI) test that I could readily find was from 1978:

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/85324

With the development of Total and Free tests, for both T4 and T3, there is little known reason to do a PBI test.

I am fascinated as to why you are asking. Suspect you have been reading up on thyroid? :-)

Thank you for that, more reading! I do a lot of reading but also know some very thyroid knowledgeable people. The reason I've been reading up again is I am thinking through my levels - I find I need quite a bit of T3 and its best to keep T4 down. I'm going to do an rT3 test but I want to do it when I have a crash or feel more hypo (too expensive just to use). The PBI was something we came across on the chance that because I have Rs225014 defect it may be related to receptor issues... Will keep reading!
