Hi I was diagnosed with hashimotos recently. I was on levothyroxine but it didn’t agree with me so I’m now on NDT. Sine the NDT I have lost weight but I think it’s more muscle that I’ve lost. Has this happened to anyone and will muscle come back when fully medicated

Why do you think you've lost muscle? That's not the usual out-come of NDT. How much weight have you lost, and how quickly?

I can see I have I can see the muscle wastage. I think around 5lbs but looks more as I have very little muscle now. I have heard it’s a Hashi symtom but could also be post menopause

It can be a hypo symptoms, certainly. But I doubt it's anything to do with NDT. Are you still hypo? Or have you optimised your FT3?

It’s my first 6 weeks on NDT felt fine till end of week 5, symptoms coming back. Got appointment and blood test next week so will know more then

Good. If your FT3 is still low, you will probably have low Growth Hormone, and that will lead to muscle loss. You need good levels of T3 to produce GH. And good levels of GH to make muscle.

Ok. Before I went onto NDT my t3 on last blood work was good but I just didn’t feel well on levothyroxine. My endo then wanted me to do a t3 only trial on the nhs which I wasn’t happy about so found a new endo who suggested NDT. So early days yet but thinking this could be post menopause related as well. She’s doing hormone blood work as well

The weight is probably water weight. If you have lost muscle, eating adequate protein and exercising will build it back up. But, unless you're starving yourself and not exercising at all I would find it unlikely that you've lost muscle.

Not what you're looking for?
