Can symptoms relate to my under active thyroid?

I was diagnosed with under active thyroid many years ago & am taking 125mg thyroxine tablets. However over the past 2 years I have been suffering with what I can only describe as ‘funny turns’ which starts off with the tops of both my arms going dead with a strong sense of wanting to bend forward to lie my head down & heart palpitations & difficulty communicating with speech. It only lasts for a few minutes resulting in fatigue and generally feeling unwell.

GP convinced diagnosis is PoTs & after a couple of tests including a tilt table test the results are negative for this diagnosis.

Family members think this could be related to thyroid issues and I am wondering if anyone has experienced similar symptoms & whether I should be requesting to see a Endocrinologist? Thank you.

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4, TT4, FT3 plus TPO and TG thyroid antibodies.

Plus very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low B12 is extremely common with hypothyroid and can cause multitude of symptoms

Private tests are available. Thousands on here forced to do this as NHS often refuses to test FT3 or antibodies

Medichecks Thyroid plus ultra vitamin or Blue Horizon Thyroid plus eleven are the most popular choice. DIY finger prick test or option to pay extra for private blood draw. Both companies often have money off offers.

All thyroid tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and fasting.

If on Levothyroxine, don't take in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, GP will be unaware)

If antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).

About 90% of all hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto's. Low vitamins are especially common with Hashimoto's. Food intolerances common too, especially gluten. So it's important to get antibodies tested.

I heard ‘Funny turns’ before & went straight to my old book entitled Early Clinical Diagnosis by Gerald Sandler & John Fry. It is a British publication. I can’t say I ever figured out a thing using it, but I remembered Funny turns (is chapter 16) in it.

It does not mention thyroid as a cause in their private practices, but may be they were overlooking this in 1986 when the text was published. It does include a number of drugs (among other things) that may cause funny turns including alcohol. It even says a past history of alcoholism can cause “autonomic neuropathy with postural hypotension.” Hopefully this is not your case. I myself always look closely at drugs first for side effects. If you take anything beside what you’ve mentioned I’d speak with a Pharmacist.

This book aside, I have read in the past that should you be leaning forward to relieve any discomfort, the cause can be coming from the biliary tract. If so & you have been loosing weight a ultrasound of the biliary area might not be a bad idea.

I wish you good luck & a fast resolution of symptoms.

The fact that your arms are going dead makes me wonder if you should be tested to see if you've had any mini strokes. Has your doctor suggested this?

Palpitations are very common in people with under-treated or wrongly-treated thyroid problems. They can also be caused by low levels of nutrients. Getting properly tested, as described by SlowDragon might highlight all sorts of problems that you were unaware of.

It is possible to get tested privately for all sorts of things (at a cost of course) without your doctor's involvement.

If you can work out what you are interested in testing and if your GP won't help then you should ask for suggestions on how and where to get tested privately. Some tests are not as expensive as you might think.

Another possibility springs to mind... Could you have hypoglycaemia?

Thank you for your comments. It looks like I’m going to have to do some more research & then go back to GP. I’m still suffering with fatigue on occasional days which can knock me out for the whole day & of course the heart palpitations & lack of sleep. Can’t remember what it’s like to feel ‘normal’!
