B12 Retest

Hi everyone,

I got a re-test on my B12 levels this week and the results are back - but the dr isn't due to see me until next week. Can someone look at these and let me know what sort of treatment options (if any) I have? I posted this in the pernicious anaemia group too but in case it's not related I thought I'd ask here...

You will need loading doses of B12 (several B12 injections initially)

You also need vitamin D tested if not been done.

Have you already gone strictly gluten free?

If not, push for coeliac blood test first

Had coeliac test and it came back 'negative' - level was 1 and range was 1-10. Starting to look at going GF for a while to see if it makes any difference. Not had vit d tested but need to save a bit more money before I have any more private tests.

Vitamin D can test via vitaminDtest.org.uk £29 postal kit

Alternatively your GP SHOULD test vitamin D

Next visit ask that they do

I believe the diagnosis guidelines are that IF will be the next test but followed by loading injections anyway.

Yes I will definitely point it out if she just fobs me off with injections and doesn't mention more tests. I'm due another test in a couple of weeks for dosage titration of levo anyway so I will ask them to do that at the same time I think.

Update:

I picked up a script for 5 ampoules of Hydroxocobalamin this morning and my first loading doses are booked for tomorrow, Thursday and Tuesday!

Dr said she asked for the test for antibodies which shows if i am not absorbing b12 and it came back negative but my blood cells were becoming enlarged and close to anaemic.

V. apprehensive as I hate needles :( but happy to be getting seen to .
