Help with blood results please

I was told that T3 wasn’t done last blood test but I got a print out and it’s on there. I am due to have another blood test done soon but want to be for-armed with a request for the relevant tests needed. At the moment I feel OK.

Thank you for your help.

Hi annegal. Couple of very important questions. What is your age and which day in your cycle were these bloods taken?

Hi annegal. From one of you previous posts, I believe you are on 175 mcg levo? Also, your thyroid antibodies TPO and TG are not listed. What are your results? Do you have Hashimoto's? Your symptoms make me think that you do.

About your bloods:

1) LH and FSH levels. Need more information. See above questions.

2) TSH, FT3, FT4: your TSH is fine and suppressed, but your FT3 and FT4 are not optimal. a) Your FT3 is much too low and is likely why you have many symptoms. It is not even 1/2 range at 4.8. 1/2 range is 4.95, but FT3 should be close to or barely over 3/4 range, which is the part of the range where most people have the least symptoms. 3/4 range is 5.875. Yours is only 4.8. If FT3 and FT4 are too low or too high in the range, that is where the most symptoms live. b) Your FT4 is great! It's just over 1/2 range, which is where it should be. c) only your FT4 is optimal because you appear not to be converting and are only taking T4.

3) Urea: yours is getting a little high in the range. Are you on a high protein diet, do you take steroids, or some other medication?

Thank you for your help. I am 51 and the blood test was taken mid cycle but I don’t always get a period. The main reason for the blood test was that my joints are very painful. When I was diagnosed at age 26 I was told I had no antibodies but have never had this test repeated.

When the surgery received this blood test I was on 125 mcg Levo and I was directed to the nurse practitioner who told me I needed to increase to 175 due to low TSH. I questioned this but she didn’t like me doing that and got annoyed with me. I duly increased and since then (November) I feel much better. Joints much improved and energy levels much improved. That’s why I don’t want to go back again/ I know she did that in error and the HP will reduce my dose but I don’t want to go back to feeling in pain and tired.

As for the urea - I’m an overweight salad eating lady who can walk 20 miles with ease. Good diet always good protein but not large amounts - no vitamins or supplements taken.

Thank you for taking the time to help me. 😁

Hi annegal. You're welcome! Do you know which day mid cycle? 25 years since testing antibodies is a very long time. ;-) Aching joints and muscles and fatigue are classic general autoimmune symptoms. Factor in thyroid disease, and the cause could very well be Hashimoto's.

Antibodies change over time. All of us with Hashi's had negative antibodies at one point. By the time I was diagnosed, my TPO was over 1000. Doctors didn't understand Hashi's or thyroid function, so I was not given medication because they said I didn't need it despite have pain across my entire body, being too cold, have major gastro problems, etc. In just a few months time and no medication, my antibodies multiplied many, many times over what they were. The two thyroid antibodies that need to be tested are: TPOab and TGab.

Increase meds due to LOW TSH? Now that's a new one! How funny of her! ;-) Increasing meds is usually due to low FT3 and FT4, and symptoms. Most doctors have a fit when they see TSH being too low and they don't take into account the free levels.

What are you Vitamin D, iron panel, B12 and folate? If these are not in good or optimal range, you will have all kinds of symptoms. Most people do not get enough D thru sun exposure in their daily lives to have anywhere near the right level of D. Everyone supplements because of this, unless they are a sun worshiper, but even some of them still don't have optimal levels of D.

Salad eating. That will cause the body to hold on to extra body fat, and nutrient levels also probably won't be near optimal. If you have Hashi's, nutrition is very important for thyroid function and to give your body the best chance at functioning the best it cand and for reduced inflammation. Do you eat gluten?

Thank you for the interesting info. The blood test was done on day 12 - The nurse practitioner phoned me to say she had left me an HRT prescription st reception but I told her I needed a proper consultation to discuss. By the time I saw her she told me HRT is contraindicated in hypothyroid ladies - which I accepted. At that time T3 result was not available and she was just working off the TSH as she told me the figure and said it showed I needed an increase. Having seen some posts on here I knew she was wrong but in 2005 I was put on 200 mcg after my son was born and I felt extremely well then - even running each day so I was happy to take a higher dose now.

No vitamin levels have ever been done - I rarely see a GP I just have a routine blood test yearly. Until I joined this forum I had no idea of what was needed for optimum health.

I have been avoiding gluten since I read it here 12 weeks ago but as I thought I had the non antibody type I wasn’t sure if it applied but thought I would give it a go. I have been surprised because my ever gurgling stomach and bloating has gone completely and people have noticed a flatter tummy.

I am wanting to get a grip of how to have optimal health now I am over 50 and your advice is much appreciated.
