patient.info/health/thyroid...

So no one could be diagnosed with thyroid disease before blood tests. That sounds improbable.

And hypothyrodism does not cause weight gain unless it is overt - I would beg to disagree, along with millions of other sufferers.

Both from the mouth of non other than Simon Pearce.

Excuse me, please. Wtf does this journalist think she knows? She has quoted him and Dr Khoo on weight gain but the rest appears to be off the top of her own head. Not suggesting that they know about this either by the way.

edit

I used to think patient.info wasn't a bad place to start any reseach. May need to rethink that.

Pearce does know about the thinning of the last third of the eyebrow. Let’s give him some credit ☹️

Start with first sentence:

The thyroid is a tiny gland located in your neck that produces hormones responsible for regulating everything from metabolism to muscle control.

It is rather odd to refer to the thyroid as being tiny - it is larger than the pituitary, adrenals, pineal, etc. Then later on the same page discussing goitres - which can be absolutely huge.

Then skip to:

It might masquerade as pregnancy or menopause.

No - masquerading is an act with intent. The thyroid, or any thyroid disorder, doesn't say to itself one morning: I think I'll pretend to look like a pregnancy.

Just what does it mean to masquerade as pregnancy or menopause? The only definition I can come up with is fools a doctor and gets mis-diagnosed. If this possible masquerading is well-known (and by being in a "populist" article, it is, by definition), then only an incompetent person would not do the tests required to distinguish between them.

Bizarrely, one of her other articles on the same site is:

Quiz: Am I pregnant?

When you're wondering whether you might be pregnant, it can be hard to think about anything else. Try our simple quiz to see whether your symptoms add up! …

If a simple quiz is enough to determine pregnancy, how can there ever be confusion?

I guess she got paid for this. :-(

Mine apparently masqueraded for decades as the menopause

And it succeeded In fooling many health professionals. With it being that stealthy you think it could have had the wherewithal to have sorted itself out!!! Not that medical incompetence had anything to do with non diagnosis of course...

"Quite often the symptoms don't just have one cause. Sometimes it's multifactorial," explains Khoo. "Although a lot of people come to us with a symptom, believing it to be caused by their thyroid disease, quite often the problem may be caused by a patient's lifestyle."

Quite often the symptoms don't just have one cause.

I think what he means there is "Quite often the symptoms don't just have one possible cause." Because a symptom can only have one actual cause.

A disease might be multifactorial, but I don't think a symptom can be.
