Hi found out I had unerderactive thyroid 2 years ago and recently I’ve noticed I’m locking/tensing my jaw day and night. I’ve read that this can happen has anyone else experienced similar and any fixes? Kind regards.

Thank you. Have you had an explanation as to why?

Great topic!

Yes, I am suffering with this currently. I am on a lower dose of levothyroxine whilst endo sorts out my fluctuating blood results. So, I'm very hopeful, williamsad19, is correct (I have been wondering!).

Let us know how you get on.

I’ve booked to get levels checked again I’ll let you know. It’s Flippin annoying as my jaw locks now without me even doing anything.

I have had a sore jaw since last sept.

My thyroid is quite swollen on and off though and I think I push my jaw forward when it is.

Very annoying and another symptom the gps just talk over!

Yes, I think it could be the pressure feeling of thyroid causing jaw to compensate (as murphysmum suggests), I first got the jaw symptoms when I struggled with autoimmune issues.

Again, the GP, sadly let me down. Did not test thyroid, did not refer to endo (I have been hypo 25 yrs), eventually, I got my Sjogrens specialist to hear me. I was tested, found to be autoimmune, thyroid shrivelled tsh <0.01. I saw Dr Peatfield who helped me begin recovery. I was toxic with levothyroxine.

Currently, I am having levothyroxine titrated, as at last I am seeing an endo!

I believe this can be a result of insufficient calcium

I used to 'set my jaw' all the time and at night would wake myself up grinding my teeth! Not anymore since I started supplements, got off of synthroid and on T3 only. I finally have numbers for the most part where they need to be.

I find this is a huge problem when visiting the dentist. If I need to have my mouth open wide for a long spell during treatment it just locks up, or snaps shut suddenly! I haven’t actually bitten the dentist yet, but there have been a few close calls!

It would be good to find a solution.

I’ve also been a teeth grinder for years, and did try a mouth guard for a while. I bit through it after a while.😬
