Hi I haven’t been able to sallow for three weeks. Eating though very well. Not lost of taste. Went doctors on the 12 of April said sore throat. Given antibiotics. Said if it doesn’t work then. It’s a virus. No lump. Had this happened to anyone. How long does it last. I don’t want to die. Please help me. I’m worried

Hi there, When I had problems with swallowing my doctor sent me for a gastroscopy. They look down your throat with a camera to see if they can find the cause. Maybe you need to go back to your doctor and ask if that would help.

What did they say

They found that I have a hiatus hernia, but I'm sure that there can be other causes.

But not cancer

They didn't find any cancer for me.

I realise that you are worried, but please don't worry. These days cancer is treatable, especially if it is found early. If your swallowing doesn't improve soon I suggest that you go back to your doctor and ask for further tests. Say that you are worried that you might have cancer. Be open about it - that's the best way for your doctor to help you.

All the best.

Hi it doesn't really sound like you have much to worry about and are highly unlikely to die from this! A viral sore throat can linger for a few weeks.the fact that you are eating fine means that you can swallow since you are swallowing your food. Try just keeping throat moist -drink plenty to do that, suck a hard sweet and give it time to clear up.

Hi there please do not worry-i had a painful sore throat 5 years ago where i could not even swallow water-i too was given antibiotics as they said it was a virus -it was a virus but it was not bacterial so antibiotics were useless- i had it for 3months and lived on painkillers, sometimes our bodies if under stress and run down can make viruses-not cancer!! If your painful throat persists they will refer you to ENT where they can do a laproscopy to view down your throat-ive had this done 3 times. Painless procedure. I would give your throat at least 7 days to see any improvement but sometimes we have to sit these things out-i think if its amything serious it usually accompanied by other symptons aswell-dont worry it will be ok.😊😊

Right ok do not worry-back in May last year I too had quite bad swallowing problems and food was getting trapped in my throat and even had food particles in my nose!! I had various tests done including 3 laproscopies at ent and also a barium swallow scan-all were clear, I also had a cat scan on my lungs as hospital thought it was a clot on my lung area as I was getting very breathless-after various trips to gp who all said it was viruses and also acid reflux I decided I would do my own research -months on after becoming quite ill and living on soup and sloppy foods I came across a article by a lady with swallowing problems and food getting stuck and choking problems like me alongside other symptoms of losing weight and trembling-thyroid disease, so I went back to gp and demanded full thyroid panel -I was hyperthyroid!! I got to the stages of i couldn't even swallow water properly-I was put on medication and things improved over the few months with the swallowing and eating, I am still not myself yet but do not get the swallowing thing so much now, if you do your research you will find it is connected to the thyroid too and lots of people have this problem-go back to your go and get the rest done, tsh-Ft3 and Ft4 and also antibodies as I found out later I had hashimotos and graves disease -all immune diseases connected to the thyroid and also swallowing problems is one of many symptoms.

Do not worry you are not going to die-also get your gp to send you to Ent and possibly endoscopy-I also had this done too and do have a hiatus hernia quite common but again that too can cause problems with food. Don't fret but you need to get this sorted for your own good-I think you are being robbed off like I was. Nothing to worry over you will get past this.xx

Have you got a thyroid problem? Has it been diagnosed by a doctor-if not go back and tell them you need your thyroid testing and also maybe a referral to see ENT at hospital. Do not worry but you need to persist and look into this.x
