Final results from Friday
30/03/18Serum TSH0.59
30/03/18Serum free T416
My gp has told me these are normal, although she would not tell me what normal meant
but they are in range from what I can see, but the problems I am having include breathlessness, fatigue, muscle ache ( middle of the tops of my arms and pains in my legs, knees). some brain fog. My GP said these would not be consistent with my thyroid and I will need to come in for a face to face and have other tests.
Re breathing but it has only happened since being on the thyroxine, previously to being diagnosed I was exhausted all the time and felt as if I walking through mud.
Not sure what else to say really at a loss.
Thanks
Carolyn

They're "normal" purely because they fall within the range. But normal doesn't mean that the levels are optimal for you as an individual.
Your FT4 at 16, with a range of 10-24, means that you are less than 50% through the range.
The aim of a treated hypo patient generally is for TSH to be 1 or below or wherever it needs to be for FT4 and FT3 to be in the upper part of their respective reference ranges when on Levo.
It's also important to know our FT3 level as that tells us if we are converting T4 (the storage/inactive hormone) to T3 (the active hormone which every cell in our bodies need). Unfortunately, most doctors don't agree with this and the guidelines say that if TSH is in range then you are well - that, of course, is in the GP's world, the real world is different!
The symptoms you describe could possibly be due to low nutrient levels and we Hypos need optimal nutrient levels. As your GP has said these are not connected and further testing is required, invite your GP to test
Vit D
B12
Folate
Ferritin
Thyroid Antibidodies
FT3
I'm guessing the last two wont be done.
Come back with results, include reference ranges, and we can comment and make suggestions if any levels are low or deficient.
Thank you Seasidsusie get the sense that she will not be very helpful, I had to ask her three times what she meant by normal and the only advice she gave was register for on line results. I asked her the range and she could not, did not tell me ( I have the ranges off here lol) The last time I saw her she said (after I asked if Vitamin D might help) that they would recommend a bit d supplement for the elderly nothing about how it can affect the thyroid at all?? I explained
Also I have sent off for some private tests as I have family history of autoimmune diseases ( according to my youngest daughter who is studying to be a DR (final year)
I asked her the range and she could not, did not tell me ( I have the ranges off here lol)
Unfortunately, someone else's range isn't any good for your results. Ranges vary from lab to lab so we have to have the ranges from the lab that did the test. As an example, for FT4 we see on here ranges 7-17 (my lab's range) 9-19, 10-24, 12-22. So if you were tested 9 at my lab you would be low for mine, bottom of range for next one and below range for the last two. And if you tested 19, it would be over range with my lab, top of range for the next one, and in the upper part for the last two. So unfortunately you have to discount anything I said about interpretation of your results, if you register for online access for your results then post again with the correct ranges.
Is your private test from Medichecks or Blue Horizon? If so hopefully you have sent for the thyroid/vitamin/mineral packate - Medichecks Ultravit or Blue Horizon Plus Eleven. Post the results, with reference ranges, when you have them for further suggestions.
Yes thanks It is with medi checks so I will do, Ive ordered the plus one so fingers crossed this will be helpful, I didn’t realise that different labs had different ranges it’s all so confusing isn’t it
If so I would contact them and ask to change to this one medichecks.com/thyroid-func... because for just £20 more you get all the vitamins and minerals tested that are important and which you probably wont get offered by your GP.
