Depends on what you want.

Have you tested and found deficiencies? If so then post your results, with reference ranges, for suggestions.

There isn't one. Most Multis contain not enough of anything to be of help, they tend to contain the cheapest and least absorbable form of the active ingredients, and often contain iron which means nothing else can be absorbed as iron should be taken at least 2 hours away from other supplements. Iron shouldn't be supplemented unless tested and found to be low. They also frequently contain Iodine and calcium, both of which have should be tested and should only be supplemented if found to be deficient.

Best to test and supplement where necessary and always advised here is to test

Vit D

B12

Folate

Ferritin

Thank u

Dear jake, testing for minerals and vitamins is not necessary at all. It is however , good to have a Vit D test every 3 years and keep it a 60 nm/ml or 150 at least on the other scale nmol.

I use Lamberts and an they do a great range of Multi vits minerals. Multiguard ADR is a good one to cover all bases. It is enough to help.

You need to know that RDA tells you only enough of that vitamin to be alive not to be healthy. There is no danger at all in vitamins except , perhaps ,too much iron which you will get if you are a meat eater. There has never in all the world been one death from supplements only health.

I treat all the time with supps andhave for 50 years and the changes for people are wonderful. No tests needed except on very rare occasions.

So you're suggesting that there's no danger in over-dosing on iron, calcium or iodine? I find that very strange.

in reply togreygoose

no, it is not strange. There has never, ever ,anywhere been one recoded death from supplements... that is one point .

YOu do not want to take tons of iron if you are a man and a meat eater and iodine is always tiny amounts. Modern supplements are in tiny, tiny amounts. The RDA is simply the amount you need to be alive , not the amount you need to be well. You can only over dose by taking huge huge amounts in a silly way. you can find excellent knowledge on so many sites ..the best probably being mercola.com .

I really do not under stand why anyone would be worried about ODs.. It does not happen.

sorry .I only answed to help someone. I have worked in the field for almost 60 yeas and there used to be , 50 years ago , a form of Vit A that some people took too much of.. long gone.

You can always consult a trained nutritionist.

Well, my experience of trained nutritionists is not very encouraging, they all tow the party-line - whatever it happens to be at that time.

But, surely, if you have high levels of iron or iodine, you do not want to take more. I know from experience the damage taking too much iodine can do! So, makes sense to me that you get things tested before starting to supplement. I'm not interested in the RDA, that has no bearing here. I'm not talking about multi-vits, which are a waste of time and money for various reasons, I'm talking about treating nutritional deficiencies, which hypos often have. And, we on here, always advice them to get tested before supplementing anything, just in case.

But, a case in point of the necessity of testing before treating, B12. It could be that your B12 is so low that you need to be tested for Pernicious Anemia. If you start supplementing before you've been tested, you won't know that.

Don't forget, you're not talking to the general public, here. You're talking to people who have thyroid problems. And people with thyroid problems have specific needs and difficulties. All the rules of life in general go out the window when your thyroid isn't functioning properly.

I overdosed on B12 and lost feeling in both my lower legs. Absolutely get tested before consumption of supplements . To much can be as bad as to little.

Hi Jake, although you’ve have good advice about testing for deficiency, my daughter who is a naturopath advises that Nuri is a good multi vitamin.

I am not medically qualified but I think it is important to find out if we're deficient in any of the important vitamins/minerals. There's no point in taking something we're not deficient in but optimising if we are can only be a good thing. Too much, mind you, isn't recommended.

B12 and Vit D are pro-hormones that have essential work. Before supplementing with B12 and someone is deficient, they should be checked that they don't have a B12 deficiency or Pernicious Anaemia. Taking B12 can mask both a deficiency and P.A.

Please have your vitamins and minerals tested first then post the results on here with the ranges for answers on dosage, makes, etc. I did this and now feel much better it's well worth the effort.

You do not need to get them from a doctor. They are classified as "P: Pharmacy"

medicines.org.uk/emc/produc...

P: Pharmacy is defined in the document linked below but pretty much means a pharmacy can sell them from behind the counter.
