I think you might be in the ideal place to go and ask an Italian pharmacist!
It seems reasonable to suggest they might be able to do exactly what UK pharmacists can do - supply a small quantity without a prescription. However, these things do vary by country.
Just to update you and my post..an Italian pharmacist sold me a packet of 'Eutirox Levotiroxina Sodica' for just over €2 for 50 tablets of 50mcg..happy days
