Help with urinary tract infections

I’ve suffered with UTIs for many, many many years I recently discovered D-Mannose capsules (from Amazon uk) and find them very good. This week I had an appointment with my gynaecologist who said studies have been done on these and he is now recommending them to his patients with regular UTIs. He suggested taking one every other day which is much less than stated on the bottle but I think it’s probably individual trial and error. They are the ‘new cranberry’ of the bladder world it seems 😉. Not often am I ahead of the game!

Thought I’d share as many of you might be suffering. Hope this helps.

Joan.

Good you found something to help

Your last results for thyroid suggests you were under medicated so it's possibly the root cause

Repeated UTI are linked to being hypothyroid

As you have Hashimoto's are you on strictly gluten free diet?

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

But don't be surprised that GP or endo never mention gut, gluten or low vitamins. Hashimoto's is very poorly understood

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

Ideally ask GP for coeliac blood test first

SlowDragon, most UTIs are caused by E. coli (a bacteria found in faecal matter).

Toilet paper is cannot be relied upon to effectively clean up after having a bowel movement. A thorough wash afterwards is.

As my old professor in microbiology used to say 'it takes 1 second for faecal bacteria to pass through 5 layers of toilet paper.' So, if the anal area is not kept meticulously clean, faecal coliforms will, in the warm usually moist environment of underpants infect the urethra and then the bladder.

Also a good reason to wash the hands with soap and water after going to the toilet.

A majority of men don't. A high percentage of women don't or not effectively. The most common bacteria found on computer keyboards are of faecal origin. (From a lecture I attended a couple of years ago.) Considering, all too often, people working at computer desks are also snacking or drinking, it's all rather eyebrow raising.

Computer keyboard keys are the worst things that harbour bacteria and viruses. That's why back in 2003 when the SARS started up in Hong Kong, hospital keyboards were covered by cleanable plastic. You just can't keep keyboards clean because the keys are a porous type plastic.

iPhones are covered in a fascinating melange of bacteria especially because people appear to be unable to leave them out of the bathroom.

I’ve been taking folic acid, upped my Vit D, also using spatone and I have to say am feeling much better. Still aching, dizzy spells, fatigue and lots more but at least I’m moving around much more. We also got a rescue dog which has helped us get motivated and brought lots of fun into our lives, he’s a sweetie. 🐶

I'm glad you discovered that, Joan. It has been around for at least fifteen years but do you think a doctor would ever recommend it? I fear not. Glad you posted this for others.

Wow. I am hypo and have been for at least 6-8 years. I started getting recurrent UTI’s to the point that every six months I would have a kidney infection and it would alternate sides.

I was referred to the urologist without much help or results concluded from the visit. Since I’ve been going to the endocrinologist, about a year now, and gotten my TSH levels regulated I have noticed I haven’t had quite as many.

I was mostly shocked to hear from SlowDragon that repeat uti’s can be linked to hypothyroid. Never heard this nor came across info before until now but it actually makes a lot of sense.

The last time I had an infection (including blood so needed to go to Drs as a red flag) I was given advice by a nutritionist tutor (biomedicine at time shudder)

D-Mannose every three hours. (I have Viridian’s powder).

Probiotics and vitamin C every two hours.

Lots and lots of fluids, avoid sugar.

I sat in warm bath first afternoon and just had little pees lol, more comfortable

I didn’t cash in the antibiotics px and cleared it in two days.

I bought urine dipsticks off Amazon to check the infection had cleared.

There are a number of herbs that clear uti’s including Uva usi, but i don’t know clear protocol yet.

Jo

I didn’t know link with thyroid either.

I’ve been having reoccurring uti’s for over 10 years. At least one a month. I’ve had scans, tests, observations, biopsies etc etc. In June last year I had a coil put in for heavy ongoing bleeding, uti’s decreased, I then had estrogen patches and since then I’ve only had one uti which went away without treatment. It seems my 10 years of uti’s could just have been menopause symptoms! I was just over 40 when they first started, don’t suffer like I did. I didn’t have anything else menopause related unless you include the fatigue I have and have had for many years.

I hope you all get to the bottom of your own issues.

Hi, yes I swear by D-mannose! I've been using it for a few years now along with Saw Palmetto soft gels. I was on cranberry extract for years and then it suddenly stopped working! I found D-mannose and have been taking it daily ever since. My mum kept stopping it after her infection would clear up but she would end up getting antibiotics from the gp over and over again. So I said just stay on it one tsp a day, which keeps it away, for both of us. It seems safe and has only positive side effects so far. Glad you found it! 😊

Joant24, I've always taken 1/2 a teaspoon of bicarbonate soda in 1/2 a glass of warm water 3 times a day for 2 days, & the infection's gone by then.

Hope this helps.

Cheers, Liz

My sympathy to you for going through UTI . From my own experience I can tell you it came from being hypothyroid . Did you recently have your thyroid panel checked ? It might just be a tweaking with your thyroid meds to rid of your UTI experiences .

Best Wishes .

You have my sympathy. I am seeing my gp on Friday as I'm getting them too often. They are such a miserable problem.

I don’t really know sorry, I went to amazon uk and found it by accident when ordering some probiotics. The one I use is by Swiss BioEnergetics and it’s manufactured in the Uk so I thought, that’ll do ☺️
