Cannot stop itching from the top of my head to my toes. Covering myself in cream and using a moisturising shower gel.

Taking extra B12, what else can I do?

My GP told me that itching can be a sign of anaemia.

in reply to SeasideSusie

Oh no, can’t have anything else wrong with me.

If your B12 has Niacin in it, that can cause you to flush and itch.

in reply to Pot-o1

Will have a look. Thank you.

in reply to

Not a trace!

Niacin is B3, it wont be in a stand alone B12 supplement but will most likely be in a B Complex.

in reply to SeasideSusie

I have a stand alone supplement.

Check for interactions with any of your medications and supplements. Google Medication 1 + Medication 2, etc, Also Medication 1 + Supplement 1, etc.

Have you changed anything recently - washing powder, shampoo, soap, shower gel, etc. Have you eaten anything new?

If absolutely nothing has changed, and checking all medication and supplement interactions brings nothing up, I would ask your GP to check for anaemia.

Will do that, I take so many pills and supplements although usually very good at checking them. Thank you

Have you changed your B12 supplements? There may be fillers that you are reacting to or the type of B12, i.e. cyano, methyl if this has changed.

No, same ones as always. I need a thyroid test so will get tested for anaemia at the same time.

Hylda, itching was a major sympton of my Graves' disease.

Best wishes.

in reply to Canta

My brother in law has just been diagnosed with Graves’ disease but he has an overactive thyroid, mine is under active

Canta in reply to

Yes I'm aware of that, Hylda, but didn't know you were hypo. I developed urticaria when my new GP reduced my levo dose (anyone ever had a new GP increase a dose?). Urticaria is associated with thyroid disease but you would of course see skin markings if that were the cause of your itching. Good luck in getting it sorted soon - and also to your brother-in-law.

in reply to Canta

He is having big problems with double vision did you have that?

Canta in reply to

No, I was lucky in that I didn't have any eye problems. I also didn't lose weight because I ate to compensate; mainly sweets, cake, chocolate and biscuits!

One strange symptom I had was that my hair lost some of its colour. There was a visible line as though a hair colourant was growing out, but I hadn't used colourant on any of that hair. As the thyroid impacts on our whole body there are so many symptoms of which the medical profession are unaware.

in reply to Canta

Wish I could eat sweets, cake, chocolate and biscuits!

Hi Canta,

I have just replied to Hylda's post and noticed yours re urticaria.

I have been hypo for seven years and started with urticaria last year. I had been taking NDT for 15 months. It first started when out in the cold (cold urticaria) but then it started to appear for no reason.

I started to think it was the NDT. so changed back to levo. The hives settled for a while but they have come back the past few weeks.

I am wondering if they appear when my thyroid levels are out.

Sorry you suffer to, do you have any further info. regarding hives and the association with the thyroid.

Many thanks.

Lucylocks, the itching I experienced when I had Grave's wasn't urticaria, it was pruritis, a not very well known symptom.

I had a partial thyroidectomy in 1985 (7/8ths removed) and was just left, basically, until many years later it was discovered I was hypo after I complained of looking a bit yellow. I was put on levo and gradually got my dose up to 150mcg, which I was on for some time feeling ok, but then went down to 125mcg as every time I had my company medical checks the doctors moaned about my high T4 and low TSH, which got me worried.

In 2012 I moved and my new GP saw it as her mission to get my TSH in range. Well, my body didn't think so and hence the urticaria - plus other lovely things - when I ended up on 75mcg levo. I wonder where she would have stopped if I hadn't gone to see a private endo who put me on 100mcg (but said I could probably take a bit more)?

During this time I also saw an immunologist as it was thought the urticaria I was suffering was a reaction to the Omeprazole (PPI) which I needed when the levo was reduced. The immunologist asked immediately if I had ever had thyroid problems.

I'm sorry for the long reply, but I thought I should explain as my previous post could have been a bit confusing. Apart from the fact that urticaria is another autoimmune condition, and maybe flare-ups occur when the levels are wrong or fluctuating too much, I don't know much about it's relation to the thyroid, but there is info online.

I hope you get your levels stable and correct and the urticaria clears up soon.

Hi Canta,

thank you very much for your reply.

Sorry you have had problems with Doctors reducing your meds.

I am starting to think the urticaria has something to do with the thyroid levels.

When taking NDT my T4 was below range and this is when the urticaria started.

When I went back on levo. it did settle for a few weeks but then it reappeared.

My recent test showed quite good T4 but a bit low T3

I am now thinking it as to do with getting the balance of T4 and T3 right.

Strange I had it on my arms on Wednesday, nothing for the next few days but today I have it again. The other thing I am wondering is if it is gluten causing it. I did eat spaghetti last night and ate quite a bit more bread than normal on Tuesday.

So pleased your has now cleared.

Do you mind me asking are you gluten free?

Many thanks.

Lucylocks, my urticaria was coming and going, think that is the usual presentation. I'm not gluten free, hard enough being vegetarian. I wasn't a vegetarian when I first had thyroid problems but I was during the urticaria period and I don't think there is a connection. If a change in dose doesn't work then it's certainly worth seeing if gluten free works. A friend of mine developed an overactive parathyroid gland and it was found he was coeliac.

Best wishes.

Thank you Canta,

I think I am going to get my thyroid levels checked again then take it from there.

Hi Hylda,

what are your thyroid levels like.

I find I itch a lot when I need a dose increase. I itch a lot on my back, it is a sort of burning itch.

Hope you find what is causing it soon. I know it is really annoying.

Best wishes.

in reply to lucylocks

Have just had an increase up to 125, but think it’s nearly time for another blood test. Trouble is my TSH will be about 0.05 and they will cut the dose again even though my cardiologist assures me that it isn’t a problem

lucylocks in reply to

As I said I use to itch when I needed a dose increase but a couple of times I got the itching after a dose increase, around six weeks after.

I thought maybe if the thyroid levels were low it caused the itching, then when they rose it cause the itching again. Just my thought. It eventually settled down though.

What is your T4 and T3 like?

in reply to lucylocks

Could be after my increase. Haven’t had my T3 tested ever and my T4 was last tested a year ago!! It’s like they don’t test my cholesterol anymore because I take a statin!! Keep meaning to get a test done privately but going to change our surgery so will see if the new one is any better first.

lucylocks profile image
lucylocks in reply to

I get tested privately occasionally as Doctors won't test T3 and do not test T4 much now.

I hope you get your itching sorted out soon,

in reply to lucylocks

Thank you

in reply to lucylocks

Today I am even itching in my ears which is a bit difficult to scratch with hearing aids in!

lucylocks in reply to

Hi Hylda,

my husband complains of itching in his ears and has recently started with head itching.

He is not hypo. but I think he may be heading that ways as his TSH is climbing.

Hve you tried an anti histamine to see if the itching settles.

in reply to lucylocks

Will try one tomorrow
