Atmospheric deep slate blue, heavy skies, moodily setting the backdrop to an ancient landscape full of history.

Beautiful.

Landscape and the very Soil that we come from has a very powerful tug on us. 15 years ago I drove up the Scotland from Wiltshire and passed through Skipton on the way.... I was quite overcome. I had never been there in my life before but somehow I felt as though I had "come home". It was an extraordinary feeling. The fleeting, scudding clouds were creating leaping shadows across this beautiful landscape; the colours were golden 'bracken' greens with a hint of purple heather coating the gentle rolling hills that were being illuminated with strong ever changing shafts of sunlight and the slate grey dry stone walls crisscrossed the valley floor.... The road twisted along in the landscape and I remember being the only car on the road. I was awe struck, I had to pull up by the side of the road and feel the sun and the crisp breeze on my face as it was the end of March.. Somehow I felt transported.

When I returned home to Wilshire, I told my Mother how I had felt when I encountered this fantastic landscape; it was then that she reminded me that our ancestors had migrated from Germany as Saxons in the 14thC during one of the famines in the Middle Ages. The whole clan came to Yorkshire as they were miners, they brought their name with them and it's still known to this day. As time went by, they then, in the early 19thC, migrated to Wales.

I was in fact born in Cardiff and spent some of my childhood in Wales. I love Welsh folk, they are so open and instinctive and generous, no wonder do many Italians stayed there after the war... However, I have never been so affected by the landscape in Wales as I was that day in Yorkshire... So who is to say that this incredibly beep atavism is not something passed down to us in our genes? This great sense of belonging and coming 'home' goes very deep. I guess it's why people take up arms and fight for their homeland?!

I have only ever once experienced something similar. I had not returned to my Catalan home on the coast from Barcelona, (my father is Catalan) for 25 years. This was sadly due to the rifts that come with family divorce... I returned there to visit family and childhood friends.

We arrived late at night by car. The approach roads are all twisty and turning and are lined on either side with huge bamboos that arch into the road. The passing headlights of the car create wonderful strobing shadows projected onto the tall swaying bamboo stalks as you travel late at night...the wonderful warm sweet smells of the land and the soil itself... enhanced by the complex chorus the night-time sicadas and all the other little bugs was heavenly. Again I felt that defensive instinct, that this too was my home, my soil! It was quite overpowering.

My grandfather who was a very eminent doctor believed that the phenomenon known as, or thought to be 're-incarnation', might in fact be some form of genetic memory passed down in the cells. We would have many such discussions. I think it could one day be proved to be so.

Life is so full of so many wonders. There are so many thoughts to think, so many things to experience, places to see, people to meet, things to learn...we don't have time to be unwell!!

We must keep striving to overcome!

As the Ancient Romans said Superamus! ...We overcome!

Enjoy this lovely day. I hope the weather is bright for you in France too.

Best Wishes

Wow I had just posted my reply before I saw your beautiful description about 'coming home' and genetic roots! It describes exactly how I feel about South Shropshire and the Welsh Marcher area plus Avebury! I wish I had your gift with words. You sent shivers down my spine as you described my feelings so accurately. Thanks again.

I think you have more company that you realize. And it works both ways. Ugly environments depress me. There are many beautiful places n the US but we don't have to go very far to drive by strip malls anl commercial bldgs that people who designed(?) themmade functional and forgot about beauty and charm. IMO there are a lot of 'concrete jungles'in the States. irina1975

I'm so glad you posted this. I haven't been to Avebury for about twenty years but the very thought of the place brings back lots of positive feelings. It has such a wonderful atmosphere. Thank you. It's raised my spirits.

I agree entirely.

I think landscape, Nature and the outdoors can have a very positive healing effect upon us as it does lift one's spirits. I have many more... I shall post another just for you!

Can't wait! Until recently I had several picture postcards, mounted in clip frames, in my hall. Only took them down because they faded. 😨

Very peaceful. Would love to have it on my wall. I'm no art connisseur but all the prints, art on my wall was chosen by me to relax and help create a serene environment. My apt is, for me, a place that is uncluttered and though not furnished with many expensive things, everything , in some way helps calm me. Have never been able to have my environment chosen completely by me til I moved by myself. Beautiful picture and blue is my favorite color. Thanks. irina1975
