Moving to Scotland..availability of T3

Due to redundancy, I am now upping sticks and moving to Glasgow (or nearby). In London, I am fortunate to receive T3 from my NHS GP on the advice of my endocrinologist at Kings College Hospital. My understanding is that Scottish NHS do not prescribe T3 so I will now need to source from abroad. Can you please message me privately with recommendations. We are moving end of March and I would like to have a six month supply to keep me ticking along. Many thanks.

Mantras131,

Scottish NHS do not have a blanket ban on T3 but some health authorities have banned it. I don't know which have. Pamela0106 lives in Scotland and may be able to advise.

I get T3 on the NHS in Scotland so it absolutely is possible.

I did have to fight for it but if your records are being transferred and your repeat prescriptions are listed then it shouldn’t be that big of an issue. They may query it with you and also may try to switch you to T4 but you should refuse and make it clear that your prescription is under the recommendation of an Endocrinologist (and that it’s in your records already) as per the NHS and BTA guidelines you are not a suitable candidate to switch to T4 only.

Some Health Boards here (we don’t have CCGs) will try hard to switch you but they must only do so with your full engagement and approval. They also have documented guidance that if a patient is switched to t4 only and feels no benefit that they must reintroduce T3 to you as well.

Personally if I were you, I would not allow the switch in the first place and get your existing Endo or Gp to make sure there is a documented record in your medical file that says you are not suitable to switch. They can’t switch you then x

A belated thanks. I am off to revisit with GP on Friday and it's good to be prepared. Thanks for the info.

It's a lottery up here, whether the Health Board will prescribe or not. I'm 30 miles from Glasgow and my NHS Endo will happily prescribe T3, but not my NDT. I know several Endos at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow still prescribe it. If you let me know your new area, will get back to you with Endo names.

Sorry if you get this twice! Wi-Fi misbehaving. I am registering with new GP in Helensburgh on Friday and will take letter from my London Endo which has T3 and T4 prescription. Fingers crossed although I am anxious. We live just outside Helensburgh, G84. If you could send me Endo names that would be great. I really appreciate this forum ..would be lost without it. Thanks for your help.
