What they don't consider, because there's no test available is the widespread, almost endemic, Non coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) with almost any autoimmune disease, but especially Hashimoto's

NCGS can be just as serious as coeliac, but it's dismissed as non-existent without a clear cut test

GPs and Endocrinologists should test EVERYONE with Hashimoto's for coeliac disease. Then, even if result is negative, strongly suggest that patient try's strictly gluten free diet for 6 months and NHS should also monitor antibodies during this period

If patient notices improvements and/or antibodies fall then they should be advised to stick on gluten free diet

The prevailing thought now is that gluten issues are overdone and that other problems can also account for intestinal upsets that are not accounted for.

They would say the issue is overdone then they can ignore us!

The issue is not helped by faddists who think a GF diet is healthy but they are not sensitive to gluten.

I was diagnosed intolerant to wheat before I ever had thyroid disease. When I was diagnosed positive for TPO antibodies I went GF and it helped a lot. 2 of my grandchildren are coeiliac (not confirmed by test) simply by their reaction when they have ingested gluten accidentally!

I never thought I had a gluten issue, no gut symptoms at all. Negative coeliac blood test twice, once 24 years ago, soon after Hashimoto's diagnosed (I was in wheelchair as so ill) Once 2 years ago, due to very poor mobility. (Only in my 50's)

But endoscopy in 2016 revealed I had serious gluten intolerance. DNA test said unlikely to be Coeliac, but couldn't rule it out. It's not always clear cut

Eminent gastroenterologist told me both silent Coeliac and gluten intolerance are massively under diagnosed and missed for years, decades or never picked up.

Now I am fully recovered, strictly gluten free and on T3 & T4 plus masses of vitamin supplements

Thanks for sharing. Im very interested in this as im a non-responsive coeliac and have developed thyroid disease too. Following a gluten free diet and getting the thyroid hormones balanced (using T3 & T4) has really helped me. But over the years ive begun to think of myself as "immune system compromised" and i have recently discovered LDN (low dose naltrexone) which is an immune system "modulator" and is proving helpful to me.

See this link for a better explanation!
