Can someone please clarify for me. Should you be consuming soya products when you have thyroid disease? Am hearing so many conflicting things I need it clarified if someone can help?

Thyroid disease and soya
Thyroid UK say to avoid it thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/treatm...
and on about.com Mary Shoman's site thyroid.about.com/od/soy/a/... warns about it,
and everything I've heard and read says to avoid soy.
If you don't already have hypothyroidism then eating large amounts of soy over a long period of time can destroy the thyroid from what I've read.
Personally I avoid it.
No, you should not. I second what SeasideSusie says. Unfermented soy is not a health food, it's very bad for everyone, but especially bad for hypos.
Fermented soy is supposed to be ok, but as I Don't like it, I haven't tried. However, remember that it is only intended to be a condiment, not a main meal. And be very careful with soy sauce, which is supposed to be fermented but often isn't.
Always read labels, because unfermented soy can pop up anywhere and everywhere - because it's cheap and filling! It's difficult to find bread in the UK that doesn't have soy flour, so always ask. It can be called soy/vegetable protein, soy flour, soy/vegetable oïl. The manufactureres are very sneaky and Don't always say which vegetable it is!

Very true about the bread. I have no problem eating bread but it's impossible to find one without the addition of soy flour where I live, small shops and limited choice . I've even rung the company that supplies the unsliced bread with no label that is available here only to find that it contains soy flour. I don't buy it very often now, use rice cakes more than bread.
