FT3 / T3 test

Looking on Medichecks site for tests.

Please can anyone explain the difference between the above tests. I am looking to see if I’m converting my Levothyroxine as having been on it for a year now, do not feel any better really. Am taking 100mcg.

T3 = Total T3 (TT3) which is T3 bound to proteins.

FT3 = Free T3 (FT3) which is T3 unbound to proteins and available for use in the cells.

Total T3 is rarely used in the UK as Free T3 is seen as more useful.

If you want to check your conversion you need to order TSH, FT4 and FT3 at the same time.

Free t3 is the one you want. Total T3 measures all the T3 in your blood including that which is bound to proteins and not available fo ruse. Free T3 is just what is available for your body to use. You also need TSH and free t4 done at the same time.
