Anyone only taking t3 and see improvement to their hair?
Not personally I take T3 and have no thyroid but have always had thick and healthy hair, sorry. I wonder if it's something else. Before, after TT taking Levo or NDT it's always been thick. What about vitamins and minerals?
Hair loss was terrible on Levo. Distressing though that was, it was not the worst side effect I experienced. Since being on t3 only, I shed less hair than before diagnosis. I've even managed to grow it long!
Hello Jump1
I have been on T3 only for many years now. I am happy to say that my hair and nails have gradually improved after I changed from Levo but, this only happened after I began adrenal support. If you have been ill for a prolonged period your adrenals may be compromised and could need help. Your body cannot fully utilise T3 until your adrenals are working efficiently.
Read up on adrenal exhaustion, which is very common if your body has been struggling to cope with insufficient thyroid hormones. GP's don't recognise this condition so don't expect any help from them but theres plenty of information on this site and you can order a 24 hour saliva test which will measure your cortisol levels, I use glandular adrenal support, which is readily available online, and have now regained my health but its been a long journey. All the best to you.
Thanks chorkie. What is the glandular adrenal aupport. I thought u had to rest relax and eat healthy to support adrenals. Thats wat i have been doing
I was on thyroxine for 17 years.I had many hypo symptoms, but hair loss was not one of them until the last couple of years.I believe this was due to the effect of overwhelming stress affecting my adrenal glands.I became very anxious & depressed at the same time.My scalp became unbearably dry & itchy & my hair started to fall out.
I then did really well on T3 for 2 years, which I used to help heal my adrenals.I felt really well on T3-only,with many hypo symptoms improving.Unfortunately I slowly lost a very large amount of hair.I did not see a lot of shedding.I think too much T3 has put my hair follicles to sleep.I am just praying that it hasn't killed them.
I now take NDT,after another crash into anxiety & depression while on T3-only.I have bought Thorne's adrenal cortex after much research on here using the search box & asking advice.haven't started it yet,as I am still weaning myself off antidepressants, which have saved me from another 2 years of living hell, like the first time I crashed into anxiety & depression.I am on a tiny dose, but it minimises anxiety.
I am taking Ashwaghanda,Rhodiola & Holy Basil for my adrenals & will add the adrenal cortex soon.

Hi Jump1 - I had periods of hairloss beginning in my early 20s. By the time I was finally diagnosed at 45 my scalp was visible with lanky, thin strands. Now, 53, my hair finally looks and feels good, nails are strong Eyebrows never recovered, and Inhave minimal body hair.
I have been on T3 for three years, take hydrocortisone for low cortisol and all necessary supplements, am on a paleo diet with lots of good fats. I also switched to all natural hair care and colour.
So the answer is yes, but T3 is not a magic pill, but part of an overall regime tailored to your body's needs.
PS When I was slightly overmedicated on T3 my hair started to fall out again!
What were ur levels?
I have noticed since being on T3 only that my hair is much softer and has actually slowed leaving my head! The other thing that changed is I now have an area in the back of my head that once was kind of wavy but now is quite curly! I thought that very interesting.
Before I went on to T3 only my hair was very sparse, broke easily and I took to wearing a wig at times because it was just such a mess. I never needed it cutting as it was falling out or breaking off once it got to about a couple of inches long. I made the decision to go T3 only when it became clear that my pituitary was failing and not producing any TSH and have built the T3 dose slowly to a full replacement level. Once I got onto a decent level of T3 my hair started to grow again and its now nice and soft although a little thin. It is also a lot stronger and breaks less often and I now have to have it trimmed on a regular basis. My eyebrows have also grown back a little but I don't have much body hair.
