Help with blood tests please

Hi everyone I’d really appreciate help with my blood tests. I had them done privately as it looks like I might have to have a TT due to substernal goitre.

I am currently on 100mcg Levothyroxine and Vit D Gel tablets suggested by endo as I am ‘moderately low’.

Many thanks as always for your help and expertise.

Ali8655,

If you are symptomatic there is scope to increase 100mcg dose to raise FT4 and FT3 and reduce TSH.

The goal of Levothyroxine is to restore the patient to euthyroid status. For most patients that will be when TSH is 0.3 - 1.0 with FT4 in the upper range. FT4 needs to be in the upper range in order that sufficient T3 is converted. Read Treatment Options in thyroiduk.org.uk/tuk/about_... Email dionne.fulcher@thyroiduk.org if you would like a copy of the Pulse article to show your GP. The Thyroid UK office opens on 3rd January.

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies are positive for autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's). There is no cure for Hashimoto's which causes 90% of hypothyroidism. Levothyroxine treatment is for the low thyroid levels it causes. Many people have found that 100% gluten-free diet is helpful in reducing Hashi flares, symptoms and eventually antibodies.

If your surgeon is able to clear all of the thyroid material from the thyroid bed you may be fortunate and find that Hashimoto's burns out without a target thyroid to attack.

Active B12 >35 is very unlikely to be deficient.

Folate is deficient and that will affect transport of B12. Your GP should prescribe 5mg folic acid for 2-3 months to correct folate deficiency.

VitD is optimal around 100-150. What dose vitD are you taking?

Ferritin is high which usually indicates inflammation or infection somewhere in the body.

CRP is also high indicating inflammation somewhere.

I am deleting your results image as your name and birth date are visible.

Thank you Clutter. I am taking 5000 iu of Vit D.

I have been diagnosed as prediabetic and wonder if that could be a reason for any of the high inflammation markers.

I should have mentioned that I am on 12 weekly B12 injections as it was at the bottom of the range 12 months ago.

Ali8655,

5,000iu should see you right. Make sure you take it 4 hours away from Levothyroxine.

You still need folic acid to correct the folate deficiency or the B12 injections won't work properly.

Sorry, I've no idea whether prediabetes causing inflammation.

Thanks. Could I get folate acid myself as my GP not very amenable to private blood tests.

I take my levo first thing in a morning and everything else on an evening.

Should I be concerned about the inflammation markers as this is the second private blood test that has identified inflammation/infection.

Ali8655,

You can only get 5mg on prescription but you can buy 400mcg and 800mcg doses without prescription. I would be wanting my GP to do a full blood count to check out the inflammation.

Thank you so much for your advice. I will make an appt with another GP in the practice regarding the inflammation markers and hopefully he/she will be more helpful.
