Acid misery withdrawing Omeprazole

Hi, I have recently stopped taking Omeprazole for stomach acid as I read that it just clears your gut of anything useful & as I am trying NDT & additional supplements for Hypothyroidism I wanted to make sure they were able to do what was required of them.

I am sitting here at stupid o'clock because I can't sleep or even lay down because of the acid.

Can anyone help with an idea I could try to help with this other than going back on omeprazole. No sleep & sitting up all night is really counter productive. I have been feeling so much better on NDT & supplements apart from this one stumbling block.

AllisonStaffs I've found Slippery Elm by Now Foods to be excellent, has really helped my acid reflux/hiatal hernia which had become debilitating.

Also meant to ask

Do you have Hashimoto's (high thyroid antibodies) if so are you strictly gluten free

This can help gut improve

Are you on adequate thyroid hormones? What's you most recent TSH, FT4 and FT3

Have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 tested? What supplements do you take, if any to improve all these

I am sorry about the misery you are going through Alison. I stopped Omeprazole because I do not like what I have read about the drug. I also continue to use conventional therapies, so am taking Ranitidine 150mg when I need to & also Gaviscon Advance at night. My ENT Consultant actually prescribed it 4 times a day but I don't need that.

He also told me not to eat all sorts of foods, including tomatoes, citrus fruit, coffee, chocolate etc etc..

I tried the apple cider vinegar & that made things worse. My diet is quite bland now but I can have one cup of coffee in the morning & I limit the tomatoes etc., to before 3pm. I don't eat much chocolate anyway. I eat porridge for breakfast but I have read about someone suggesting eating it at night, you may find that something like that would help you.

I am on oral steroids amongst other drugs. I don't currently have thyroid problems.

Poor you i feel youre misery, i was once on omprazole and decided to come off it as in my opinion its poison, i suffered cruel for the 1st few months but it does improve ad it dies have a rebound effect. I have less attacks now, dont eat spicy foods or vinergary, tomatoes, onions etc. At tbe moment i take good old gaviscon and zantac otc but i make sure i take them away from my meds. I think you are going through rebound symptons at moment. Have you tried raising the bed by putting books or bricks under the head sides? The pain in awful, mine usually lasts 2 days. Take care.😊

Omeprazole is only to be used temporarily (max 3 months I believe). I developed something called gastroparesis or delayed gastric emptying - Omeprazole is used to help regulate the digestive process. I used Buscopan as well before meals. Smaller meals, low fat and careful attention to food sensitivities (get food testing done if at all possible) will help with this also. I even went to a liquid diet for a few days to allow my gut to "rest" which seemed to help. And finally do look at the stress triggers in your life because I do believe this is the root of many stomach issues. Best of luck.

If you have been on omeprazole for a while suggest you discuss coming off it with your GP - cold turkey is generally not recommended. If you can't face talking to GP then see if pharmacist can't help.
