Hashimotos help!

Hi,

I have auto immune thyroiditis (hashis) and currently feel like I'm being choked.

My TSH fluctuates but remains at the higher end of normal and so my GP and the endo I saw said they would not medicate because it would cause more harm than good.

I have painful joints, dry hair that sheds like crazy, low core body temp, chronic fatigue, rubbish sleep, palpitations and fluctuating weight.

I feel convinced it's my thyroid causing me grief but I don't know what to do about it!

I take thyroid support supplements and I have been gluten and dairy free for 3 years.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm at the end of my tether!

Laura.

Post you most recent blood test results for a TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 if you have them

Then members can advise

Good you're trying gluten and dairy free. Did you feel it helped or not?

You may be having an autoimmune attack or perhaps your thyroid is trying to produce more hormone. It's good you are gluten and dairy free. Your thyroid needs iodine to work with and selenium to support the action of the hormone. Also, enough Vitamin D is needed for ANY hormone to work. Of course doctors usually will not look into any of that and if the higher end of normal is 4, your TSH is way too high. It's a distinctly different world we hypos seem to be living in when it comes to treatment.....trying to get it. Many people have found it necessary to find other means to treat their condition. stopthethyroidmadness.com/l...

A horrible situation for you. Having recovered from being in a similar situation 10 years ago, it was really taking good supplements... and enough of them as consistently as possible that got me very much better. Some iodine was recommended by Dr Patrick Kingsley, along with the Sisel supplements I told him I was taking.. I take good Sisel supplements with lots of balanced trace minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. At times I have added other things like TSX (a telomere supplement), fucoidan, magnesium, B's, selenium and a balance D supplement (a mix of probiotics and D3). The iodine was good, apparently we excrete what we do not need, that is why the iodine loading test works.

I think the body is crying out for help. Mine was. I now take a supplement with NAD and that has added a new dimension of feeling proper energy through the day, and feeling calmer and more motivated.

I would say proper supplementation is vital, but do not rely on the cheap synthetic versions in the shops. They are an illusion. The body cannot make use of them. A calcium pill etc, we get just 4% of it, likewise with others. Of the more standard ones Lamberts seem effective. Here is a link to high quality ones that I have experienced work so you can feel the difference quickly, but once as unwell as this we need higher quantities than standard, at least for 3 -6 months. zest.sisel.net. I even lost weight with SiseLean a few years ago... need to do that again. One thing knowing what works, another always being as consistent as we need to be with this thyroid issue.

I never had enough confidence in the endo's I saw to trust they knew what would help. My doctor is happy I will go for tests, then surprised but happy when I manage to solve difficulties by upping my supplements. She does not know about supplements herself.

Do you mean that you are not taking thyroxine? What are your blood test results? It sounds like you need thyroxine/more thyroxine. Your endo and GP are causing you more problems not addressing this issue.

I had the same symptoms and also required my thyroid to be on the higher end of things and got the same response from doctors. I FINALLY got someone to listen to me and even though a biopsy proved “inconclusive” I had exploratory surgery done and ultimately the thyroid was removed because even though it wasn’t seen on x-rays, my thyroid had developed what the surgeon called “tentacles” and had begun wrapping them around my esophagus.

I was fortunate to find a doctor who would listen.

Heloise gives good advice. We need many different supplements when we have Hashimoto’s . If we had to choose just one it would be the selenium - but they’re all important. I may have missed it and the other replies but if you haven’t tried a good digestive enzyme you might try that. Many of us with Hashimoto’s cannot quite digest even the supplements. And if you are taking thyroid supplement like T4 you may not be able to convert it to T3 without digestive enzymes. I’ve had Hashimoto’s for 30 years and I’ve never had the choking sensation but it sounds horrible. As Heloise pointed out the doctors try to convince us that we don’t need medication unless were on deaths door - slight exaggeration but not much. It sounds like you’re in the UK. If you can afford to go to a functional medicine doctor which I understand is a private doctor in the UK - yes if you can afford to go to a private doctor then that’s the only way you’re going to get help. Otherwise I’ve seen many on this forum who educate themselves and then find alternative solutions and resources for thyroid replacement medicine . There are many many knowledgeable people on this forum - there is help and I don’t mean to make this sound so dreary . You can do this and you can get better it’s unfortunate but we do have to help ourselves whether in the UK and the US. Mainstream doctors on either side of the pond just can’t Or won’t treat Hashimoto’s patients in a humane manner.
