Having rashes and itchiness all over my body.

hi, I am recently (September) diagnosed to have a hyperthyroidism. My doctor prescribed me to take Methimazole(5mg) for 2 weeks. Then, I had to go back here in Brunei to work, and when my medications were finished already, they prescribed me Carbimazole (5mg) for 1 month. Then, I noticed that I was having rashes and felt itchy all the time. I even thought it was because the food was the reason. Then, last Tuesday, I had a consultation with the doctor and forgot to mention the rashes and itchiness.

Since I saw some posts that antihistamine can lessen rashes and itchiness, do I have to ask the doctor for the prescriptions for approval or I can buy it over the counter?

Marialinda,

It seems likely you are having an allergic reaction to Carbimazole. You should ask your endo to switch you back to Methimazole. In the meantime take an antihistamine tablet an hour before you take Carbimazole and see whether that relieves the itching.

It seems that way. Because when I used Methimazole before, there weren't any side effects or reactions. For now, I stopped taking the Carbimazole and wait until I can meet with a doctor.

Thanks for the advice.

MariaLinda,

Don't wait too long or your hyperthyroidism will go out of control.

You can buy over the counter, but why not ring your doctor and say Carbimazole is giving you a rash and can they prescribe something for it? It might be due to Carbimazole I never had that problem with skin. Piriton can help with antihistamine reactions, or ask your pharmacist they are the experts more than your GP.
