Eltroxin

An NHS endo told me years ago always to get eltroxin brand of thyroxine -as it was the best. A few years ago it wasn't available and o eventually settled for mercury pharma. Last week my chemist gave me eltroxin, albeit 5x25mg per day. Is this the same as original eltroxin? Or a different mix? Thanks ☀️

I believe the changed the formulation of Eltroxin around 2013.

I'm not certain but I believe the Eltroxin formulation stayed the same but the generic changed to be the same as Eltroxin. I'm going to bed now! but you can read the details here btf-thyroid.org/images/docu... .

I have a sneaky suspicion that Concordia / AMCo are trying to drop Eltroxin so they can introduce price increases as Eltroxin is price controlled. AMCo generic levothyroxine is currently being sold at a slightly higher price than Eltroxin. They are also making it difficult to obtain Eltroxin, many pharmacists are unable to get it. Hopefully it will all be sorted out with the latest CMA action.

Thank you all, I'm just worried as I felt the chopping and changing of brand left me feeling worse before. The pharmacist doesn't seem to "get it" 🙄

I understand MercuryPharma have the license for Eltroxin but also make a generic version of levothyroxine, but they only make one tablet type and put it in 2 different boxes.

I get mine MercuryPharma by getting the prescription as 25mg tablets so I take 6 a day to get 150mg. I’ve never had another brand that way so far.

I used to take Eltroxin and really liked the brand. I took Mercury Pharma when Eltroxin became unavailable but am now able to get Eltroxin once again. It seems the same.

Hi Suin. Like you I was also recommended to take Eltroxin and took it up until it was no longer available. Since then I’ve been on Actavis and have found it to be better than Eltroxin.

Thanks Dynaskia everyone seems to differ, I think, from searching this site

Suin,

Very difficult to accept that any one make of levothyroxine could be "the best". We are all different - some might find Eltroxin excellent when others find it intolerable.

Even Tirosint will likely offend many by its use of gelatin.

He had said eltroxin, was like your Coca-Cola in comparison to pesi. They never fail to amuse me.

A few years ago when it all changed, I was always on Eltroxin. I got moved on to Mercury Pharma without realising and went down hill over a few months. Came of MPhama and now will only use activis. Seems much more stable. The problem is most pharmacies swap out meds’ around and give us what ever they have in stock. I now insist on having activis, if they say they cannot get it then I say I will go somewhere else, they always manage to get it.

Yes my pharmacy has now gave me 100's of eltroxin and 25's of mercury pharma- even after I've explained! I may threaten to go elsewhere. Thanks Kathy21

I have 1 pack of 100 activis and a pack of 50 activis. I bought a tablet cutter and cut the 50 in half. It’s the only way as Mercury Pharma seem to be the only ones to 25’s. It was the MP 25’s that were upsetting me all along, as I got much better when I changed. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Aw I just don't know anymore, I know when I came off the original eltroxin I wasn't good, now I realise this new eltroxin isn't the same "recipe" and the chemist says he's having trouble getting it. Thanks it's great to hear what works for others 👌🏻
