Hi there I have posted here a few times, just needing some advice about my daughter. She was diagnosed in sept 2016 with auto immune hypo but not treated until July of this year when her TSH reached 10. ( it was up and down every time she had it done between sept and June). She was given a trial of 25 mg levo then retested after 6 weeks. Her TSH went down to 4.1 (0.52-4.3). I asked for an increase to 50 mg. Then She was tested 6 weeks later and the results came back TSH 0.05 (0.51-4.3) Low . T4 27.4. (12.6-21.0) high. Dr says she's over medicated. He said try 25 one day and 50 the next to see how that works. Does this sound right, she doesn't seem to have any over medicated symptons..
After reading some stuff on here I was thinking maybe she's having a hashis attack. She is gluten free and takes selenium. Alway takes her levo awAy from food and suplements and gets tested first thing in morn.
Seems a reasonable suggestion to alternate between 50 and 25mcg given her blood test results. Even if it's a Hashimotos flare you still need to respond to blood test results. Retest in 6 to 8 weeks to see if further adjustment is needed.
Why they will not prescribe until the TSH is 10, I do not know. Other countries prescribe when TSH is 3+.
Does your daughter fast before the test (she can drink water) and allow a gap of 24 hours between last dose of levo and the test and take afterwards. This helps TSH to be at its highest as that's all doctors look at and make decisions upon.
I hope she is ok. Sorry I cannot agree with the first comments.
Your daughter has only recently received help and presumably not been gluten free for very long.
There us no way to know if at this stage she is in the middle of a hashimotos flare. It is my opinion and also my specialist that you need to retest in 6 weeks then a further to ascertain if the results have changed.
If they have then it’s safe to say it is a flare ( usually you feel more ill too) if not then yes reduce the meds but not on alternating days. That’s daft at this level- it’s too much of a change- my body likes consistency- so divide and keep it level.
A tsh is nothing. To be fair it’s only approx 5 years ago the top of free t4 was 28. Twenty years ago when I was an international athlete 32 was fine because that’s what mine was during a mandatory blood test. Numbers have reduced for a reason- they don’t want us too well- little money made from thyroxine! ( and yes I have been to a conference and heard it said!)
Best to go on how she feels at present and wait the 12 weeks for another test. Otherwise her body will be like a yo-yo!
Besides it’s such a small dose too.
Any chance you have had her vitamins and t3 tested? B12 ferretin folate and d3?
Thanks, she doesn't seem to be unwell, she has a lot of hair loss, but that's been going on for about a year or more now. The only new symptom I have noticed is irritated red eyes. That could be because she alway on her phone and computer since starting back to school though. She did have some other tests done.September 2016
