When to take tyroxine?

Lillarch profile image

hi - when is the best time to take tyroxine during the day?

I currently take it 1 hour before breakfast and I feel a bit tired during the day.

I happened to take it before that (2-3 hours) and I felt much better during the day.

Might this be because of me not adsorbing medicines so quickly?

I am gaining weight very quickly with no apparent reason...

thanks!

I take mine last thing at night and for me it works much better, my T3 rose to a better level after I changed.

Always take Levo on empty stomach and then nothing apart from water for at least an hour after.

Many take on waking, but it may be more convenient and possibly more effective taken at bedtime

Perhaps this was why you found it better taken in the night

There are quite a few that always take it in middle of the night

Many people find Levothyroxine brands are not interchangeable. Once you find a brand that suits you, best to make sure to only get that one at each prescription.

All thyroid tests should be done as early as possible in morning and fasting and don't take Levo in the 24 hours prior to test, delay and take straight after. This gives highest TSH and most consistent results

Post you most recent results and members can advise if you are on optimum dose

Do you have Hashimoto's (high antibodies)

Have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 levels checked recently, if so post those too

I take my Levo at bedtime, was significant improvement

My thyroid was removed years ago and I have been on replacement since.

I am using an Italian thyroxine brand which was the one I started on just after surgery.

my Calcium levels have been normal generally but the calcium readily absorbable was always low.

My GP never suggested to have vit D, Ferritin and B12 checked.

Do I need to do it privately?

Last TSH test was 2.98 value.

I have loads of problems in gaining weight with no apparent reason and mental fogginess with fatigue.

TSH is too high, especially after thyroidectomy, should be nearer one.

Do you have FT4 and FT3 results?

You can check Thyroid and vitamins privately, if GP won't

If you have low vitamin levels, thyroid hormones struggle to work

I have ordered the test, thanks for the advise!

what type of controls do I have to do in case I am pregnant or wanting to get pregnant?

would this affect the unborn child in any way?

Lots of posts on here about best levels for conception and successful pregnancy

Was thyroidectomy due to cancer, Graves or Hashimoto's

If Graves or Hashimoto's you might look at Gluten free diet to see if this helps

my Thyroid had a 3x2cm lump on one side that was vascolarised (micro vessels) so all values were ok until it started showing off. It was made of fat mostly.

I'm not sure if it was Graves...

can this be hereditary? can I pass it to my child?

Have you tried taking it with little ascorbic acid powder in your water, to increase stomach acidity? Don't use the fizzy vitamin C as they're full of artificial sweetener & flavouring, just a pinch of plain ascorbic acid.

Would a few drops of lemon do?

I usually take the Tyroxine without water

I should think so, as long as it's just lemon juice & not sweeteners or other chemicals.

Not what you're looking for?
