Thyroid nodule and raised lymphocytes

Hello all, I have had my 4.5 cms thyroid nodule biopsied and the results were benign, euthyroid but with raised lymphocytes and some swallowing difficulties. I have been given an urgent referral for an Endocrinologist. Does this mean there is defenitely no risk of cancer? What could be the cause of the raised lymphcytes and whatvis likely to happen? With thanks

Gran123,

Benign biopsies means it is very unlikely there is any cancer. 4.5cm is a large nodule though and if it is causing swallowing or breathing difficulties it may need removing. The nodule will then be checked in histopathology and the larger sample will enable cancer to be conclusively ruled out. The remaining thyroid lobe will usually produce sufficient thyroid hormone but, if not, Levothyroxine replacement will be prescribed.

Lymphocytosis (lim-foe-sie-TOE-sis), or a high lymphocyte count, is an increase in white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are an important part of the immune system. They help fight off diseases, so it's normal to see a temporary rise in the number of lymphocytes after an infection.15 Jun 2016

This is an old post. You may not get a reply. You could start a new post asking for answers?

I don’t have any knowledge sadly, but I myself have a hyper nodule and history of raised white cell count (raised everything count actually). It was first detected when checking for a white cell drop (sore throat) which can occur when on carbimazole.

The GP told me likely “thyroid related” (However, every I now have is now “thyroid related” even when they are not eg. when I was eventually diagnosed type 2). I did ask how was it thyroid related but he had no idea and said that’s what Haematology had thought when he consulted them. Quite impressed he had consulted them. They did arrange several repeat FBC but after the fourth elevated result with no interpretation offered or action suggested I stopped bothering. If I feel unwell I will go and get FBC otherwise I didn’t see the purpose of having another test!
