I have the same problem and I haven't found a solution. I don't think anyone really knows for sure what causes it.

I've had a heartbeat in my right ear for many years. It's always worst when I first wake up and is also bad in the evening as bedtime approaches and as I'm trying to sleep, but it never really goes away. A couple of possible conditions that may be of interest are "pulsatile tinnitus" and "intracranial hypertension". There are probably dozens of other causes I know nothing about.

It would be worth searching the forum for the word "pulsatile" or "intracranial" to find other posts on the same subject. The search function is dreadful by the way, so keep your expectations low. I've found that it is best to search for only one word at a time.

Unfortunately, in my experience, pulsatile tinnitus is treated much like chronic headache, and is generally dismissed as of no importance and is assumed to be self-inflicted through painkiller use or abuse. I'm not suggesting this is true for you - I'm just saying that these are the attitudes that I've faced.

I should also point out that if your condition is driving you mad, whatever the cause, there are ways of distracting yourself which make the condition more bearable. I got practical advice from the Audiology Clinic at my local hospital.

I bought something called a "tinnitus relaxer" and speakers which go under my pillow. Theoretically, they shouldn't disturb a sleeping partner. My husband isn't bothered by noise. (These gadgets can be used during the daytime without the pillow speakers as well, or they can be used with suitable headphones or ear buds.)

The sound coming from the tinnitus gadget should never be louder than the sound you are trying to get used to, it should always be very slightly quieter than the noise inside your ears/head. This means that the pleasant or distracting noise from the gadget can be heard and so can your head noises. You concentrate on hearing the gadget and over time your brain learns to ignore the noises from your head. It worked for me. I was nearly suicidal because I could never get away from the sound in my head, but it rarely bothers me now.

I've had headaches every day 24/7 for last several years and a good part of that with tinnitus. ..they started same time as diagnosed with perimenopause and hypothroidism /hashimotos .Everything has been exhausted. ...had scans/medications, altered diet...the list is endless. .too much to list on here or we will be here all day lol...!..but I must say that I don't feel I have ever in all this time been optimally medicated with my thyroid (still working on it!) so that could be part of the problem at least ...maybe you need to look at how optimal you are and also at 49 it could be the menopause as all that hormonal upset certainly can cause constant headaches and the thyroid/menopause mix certainly taxes the adrenals which can cause tinnitus too!

Do you have diagnosed Thyroid problem and are you on Levothyroxine

If so what are your most recent results including ranges.

Plus do you have tests for vitamin D, folate, ferritinand B12. These need to be at good levels for thyroid hormones to work
