Liothyronine just too expensive

KittyCooper profile image
24 Replies

Hi I've been hypothyroid for 14 years, never felt well, finally saw a private endocrinologist who thought reducing my Levothyroxine from 125mcg to 50mcg and adding 20 mcg of Liothyronine would help, he wrote me a private prescription but the chemist wants £333 for 28 tablets! Does anyone no where I can get it at a more reasonable price? Thank you in advance for any help.

There's a post on here about 2 hours ago, from someone who gets it from Boots. Here's the link

Hope that helps.

Hi Anthea55

Thanks for your response-unfortunately nobody in any chemist including Boots has been able to help me - all charge a ridiculous price for the tablets on a private prescription and GP has refused to prescribe on the NHS

Hi since February I have been self medicating with NDT from Thailand. It's brilliantly affected and cheap. £50 p and p for a 1000 tablets. The lab can be viewed and is. Huge concern, as at first I was hesitant. I am very well and not out of pocket. I take 2 and a half a day, and do private testing!

Hi Molesnail8

Do you mind telling me where you buy it - I might go down that route if I can't get the T3 - getting desperate now as I'm so tired every day and feeling very depressed.

Hi

I can give you the information, but am unsure if i can do this on this site. Is there anyway i can send you the info privately?

Since you have a prescription, you could probably get it from a pharmacy in France or Germany or the USA.

Unfortunately, beyond knowing it is possible to do that, I don't know anything else about it. Hopefully someone else can help.

Thank you humanbean - hopefully someone will know how to do that, I have no idea, unless I have a trip to France!

I think that it is possible to order online and get it posted. But again, I've never had a prescription so don't know anything about the process.

I have read that Germany is the place to buy it as it's dispensed in 20 mcg tablets but I have no idea how to find a German pharmacy online - it's all very frustrating 😞

KittyCooper,

You can use your prescription to buy Thybon 20mcg from Germany. 100 x 20mcg costs €30.15 + €5.00 prescription fee. versandapo.de/en/0/7498960/...

My prescription says Triodothyronine - which is Liothyronine in the UK - German pharmacy have replied saying they don't supply Triodothyronine - I'm very confused!?

KittyCooper,

Tell them Triiodothyronine is Liothyronine and you want Thybon 20.

If the German pharmacy is awkward you should take a copy of your prescription then send the original back to the endo explaining that you can only get it dispensed if T3 is described as liothyronine.

This is your endo's mistake, by the way. Prescribed T3 is always called liothyronine, and the T3 found in the body is triiodothyronine. I don't think anyone has ever managed to explain why there is a difference in names.

How very odd to have written the prescription in that way! Triodothyronine as a medicine has always been called Liothyronine (or slight variations according to language).

A UK pharmacy could very well be confused! Have a look here:

medicines.org.uk/emc/

Search for Triodothyronine and then for Liothyronine. You won't find the first, you will the second.

Hi Kitty. That is a crazy price. I buy my T3 and NDT online. I was recommended the specific sites on here. I am sure someone will PM you the names. If not let me know and I will send them to you
