Multivitamin recommendations?

Hi guys,

Wondered if Thyroid UK recommends any multivitamin brands that are of good quality and reasonable price. To support the thyroid and adrenals.

Thanks!

KornishPiskie,

No, TUK don't recommend any brands.

I think multivits are a waste of money. If you are low in a vitamin or mineral there won't be sufficient in a multivit to address it. It is better to have ferritin, vitamin D, B12 and folate tested to check levels and supplement accordingly than to take multivitamins. I wouldn't supplement adrenals without testing cortisol to see whether it is high or low.

KornishPiskie - multivitamins are generally a waste of money, they tend to have such low amounts of anything to do any good, often have the wrong form of the vitamin, and if they include iron then the iron will stop everything else being absorbed. You need to test and see what your levels are then address any deficiencies or low levels with that particular vitamin and it's cofactors.

For us hypo patient, general supplements that are useful and support thyroid and adrenals:

Vit C

B Complex

And for thyroid:

Selenium

Good idea to get tested for deficiencies first ...then if they are in range find out (post on here) exactly where they need to be on the range for us hypos...as that is what's important!

B12

Ferritin

Folate

Vit D

All good levels needed!

There is one exception to the generally accepted belief that multivitamins are of no use that I can recommend and that is Orovite tablets (not the powder about which I have no experience). Not that cheap at £12 or so for 100 tablets, but not that expensive if they work, which they really do IF that is what your body needs. You really only need a tub of 25 tablets, but they no longer seem available anywhere in that size.

This used to be a prescription medicine some years ago and now is not often stocked by your average pharmacist. Available on Amazon and Ebay.
