HIgh Serum Triglycerides and hypo

Dear All

I have Hashimotos and been on levo for 15 years. Cant tolerate T3 in any form and currently working on adrenals.

1. GP ran some blood tests and is concerned that the levels of the above are 4.81 (should be less than 2.3). I have read somewhere that (like cholesterol levels) this can be to do with hypothyroidism. He has referred me to cardiologist in a hurry.

Does anyone have any comments on this? Could it be linked to thyroid diseaase?

2. Also they ran the usual NHS test (T4 and TSH only) and here are results:

T4 17.1 range 12 - 22

TSH 1.81

I have just dropped my T4 from 87.5/day as I was feeling hyper on the above which I think is the seasonal adjustment. While I dont pay much attention to TSH, I am surprised that its as high as 1.81 as it normally runs around 1 .

Could anyone please comment on either of the issues ?

Thank you

Andrea

Yes, probably linked to low thyroid. But of absolutely no consequence. It's not going to give you a heart attack! Fuss about nothing.

Your TSH is a bit high for someone on thyroid hormone replacement, but you are only on a very low dose of levo. Your FT4 is about mid-range. What you need to know is your FT3 level. That's the most important. And, how do you feel with those results?

thanks GG for reply. I will be getting my tests done privately to see T3 and anti bodies. I can't take enough T4 to feel well and can't take any T3 which am hoping adrenal support might rectify. was just curious at unusually high TSH (for me).

Am grateful for reassurance about triglycerides though!

You're welcome. :)

You also need the results of the HDL and the LDL. Divide Triglycerides by the HDL = and the result ideally should be less than 2. Or divide HDL by Total Cholesterol = and the result ideally should be above 24% .

Hi Daffers,

Hypothyroidism can result in high cholesterol. However, there is no connection between high cholesterol and heart disease. A good book about this is 'The Great Cholesterol Con' by Dr. Malcolm Kendrick.

Another good book regarding Hashimoto's is 'Hypothyroidism - the Root Cause', by Izabella Wentz. She looks at loads of things which might be going wrong when your thyroid medication is not working, including, diet, lifestyle, adrenals (as you mentioned) sex hormones etc...

Have you heard of the Auto Immune Protocol? This is a lifestyle programme which addresses auto-immunity. A good website is The Paleo Mom.

I couldn't tolerate T4 (levo) or T3 until I changed to NDT and adopted a Paleo type diet, addressed adrenals, stress and sleep. (The latter two being the most difficult!)

thanks again

I've read that sleep apnea improves on AIP. I think the Paleo Mom has some info on it.

Scazzoh, I have raead your rely and wanted to know how you worked on fixing your adrenals and sleep.

I’m not any thyroid Med for hashi, working on LDN slowly increasing, and my functional MED doctor feels that if I stay on LDN for a while I may not need thyroid meds. My adrenals are low and so was iron, very very sensitive to meds, herbs, supplements that was another reason I wasn’t recommend thyroid meds.

How did you improve your adrenals and sleep. My very key issues.

Thank you much,

Mariana

The most important thing I did to improve my adrenals and get better was to embark on a drastic stress reduction programme. Remember, I wrote this entry one year ago. One year on, after leaving my old job, taking time out, doing a mindfulness meditation course and changing my attitude to life, I am now healthy and have just started a new job. Taking supplements, such as Holy Basil helped for a while, but I stopped taking them when I got better. I cannot underestimate the importance of developing the ability to adapt to all the stresses which are thrown at us. NDT and LDN fixed the thyroid and autoimmune components, but stress reduction allowed me to heal.

High serum triglycerides are linked to an underactive thyroid as are high cholesterol and increased glucose levels, as your metabolism slows down and these will accumulate as the body cannot process them efficiently . If you are on a correct dose of medication, this should rectify itself again.

Like others have mentioned your TSH is a bit high for someone on replacement therapy. I would also look into testing and optimising Vitamins and minerals, as they can help to optimally make use of your hormones.
