It's widely available in most health shops or online.
I use Calm vitality magnesium powder. It's quite cheap, easy to adjust dose and tastes fine. Take at least 4 hours away from Levo (ideally 6 hours)
Take in evening, or afternoon if you take Levo at bedtime.
Start low and slow, see how you get on. Can cause diarrhoea if you take too much, but obviously slightly lower dose can be good for constipation
Hi Tanyaking. I am new to the thyroid world. However, I can say this far, the only mineral that has given me any relief at all has been the magnesium. I actually started taking it in smaller doses, for endometriosis pain, as it calms muscles, vessels, and heart rate. It has a calming effect, as I'm sure you know. It is used in Emergency Rooms in higher doses, for cardiac events, as it also slows the heart rate some.
Most recently I have, at night, upped my dose (sometimes taking less, depending on what's going on) to about 600-800mg (or approx 12-16 grams) of the powdered reacted magnesium bisglycinate by Thorne Research.
I purchase it online at Natural Health or at Amazon. It's about 30-35$ USD. But I think it is worth it.
It also has a tendency to relax the bowels, so I would take it at night expecting quick elimination in the morning. I would try it first, on a day when you don't need to go to work or have any meetings, just to see how you respond bowel wise.
Please let me know how it works for you. And also remember there are several types/strands of magnesium. Some people switch types ever so often, it I think this is a good starting point as you learn more about how mg works for you.
Do not take it near your thyroid medications. I'd take it maybe an hour or so before bed, as long as you haven't taken your thyroid meds within 6 or so hours. Thyroid meds and minerals such as magnesium should not be taken close in time.
If you live in U.K. You can get the Mag spray, which gets straight into the blood stream, from Holland & Barette.
I bought Magnesium to take with my Vit D tablets and I found it did make me feel a bit more relaxed and tired after I took it.
I took the dose that is written on the back of the bottle I have (half a level teaspoon = 375mg Magnesium) mixed into water or fruit drink. I have not used it too many times though because of loose bowels. I tried taking it every other day but it still caused loose stools. Maybe 375mg is too much for me to start with so now I am going to try taking 100mg and then gradually work my way up.
The one I have is the Viridian Magnesium Citrate powder. I got it from Bodykind.
