My podiatrist advised neat tea tree oil and dab it onto your nails. To get it going she gently used a file wheel to "break the surface" so to speak. You could do the same with a nail file but don't go mad or too deep! Just enough to expose some of the fungal stuff.
It does take perserverance but it went. The little bottle of tree tree lasts forever so if I see any suspicious white marks I give them a dab.
The reason I didn't opt for the tablets is that they can be quite trying on the liver, apparently.
I'm also prone to cracks between the toes which can get sore and infected. She recommended dipping little slivers of cotton wool in surgical spirit and placing the slivers between the toes for 10 minutes. It stings like b****** in a rather satisfying way and works a treat!
My partner suffered badly and used potassium pomangemate very cheap off internet and you only need a few grains will discolour your feet for a short while
Well that figures! When I was a vet nurse it was a tried and trusted old school remedy for fish with fungus on their scales..........a few grains of PP in the fishtank.
My chiropodist recommended using Canesten cream - my chemist has a cheaper version as Clotrimazole. It is an antifungal and worked on my toenail infection. You may know of it for use with thrush etc.
Years ago I read that vaseline between the toes after bath/shower is good for preventing athlete's foot. That's worked for me too.
I haven't found anything that works for more than a week or so. Been looking since 1986. Best so far has been Puriya Wonderbalm - got rid of more than any of the pharmacy brands. I get it everywhere except between my toes.
If you don't mind the pong, rub a cut clove of garlic over the affected area (may be better to do this at night). Garlic is an anti-fungal, among other things, so applying directly and upping your intake of fresh garlic will help.
I had a problem with just one big toe, for years and years. Several Gp's and podiatry bods looked at it and said it wasn't fungal. I thought I'd damaged a nerve or something wearing ridiculously high toe post sandals, or rather falling off them one evening! (Who wears high shoes to a 'Proms in the Park!!! Live and learn!)
I even sent a sample off and it came back negative for fungal.
One GP insisted it was fungal and offered me tablets for 4 months or paint on stuff for a month. I don't approve of taking tablets unnecessarily but, as it seemed to be spreading to other toes, I opted for the tablets, also in hope of them killing off any other fungal stuff going on in system.
Have a look at the symptoms for Candida/yeast overgrowth in the gut - this often is fungal nails and athletes foot. My friend had Candida in the gut which was treated and this cured fungal nail and athletes foot that she had been treating on and off for years. The problem might be internal rather than external
