Feeling of dread and despair

Has anyone out there had a feeling of dread and despair. I am not a depressive person but along side an increase of other symptoms like feeling extra cold and a bit shaky and my nails suddenly breaking off I am now feeling as though I am not long for this world. I know that sounds a bit dramatic but I feel very tearful!

Yes I must say that not so long ago I went through some pretty weird stuff. I felt like I was going mad. It would come on suddenly, hard to describe a pretty scary feeling I was loosing my mind and not in control. It was always short lived. Other times I was suddenly terrified I was going to die, other times I wanted to scream. It hasnt happened for a while now Im glad to say. Ive never had mental health problems but sometimes I was scared to tell anybody how I was feeling it was so bazar. Im just hitting 60 and only going through menopause now so no idea if it was hormonal or thyroid related. X

Well I've never felt like this before. I had a total hysterectomy a year ago but I was diagnosed with breast cancer 15 years ago and have been taking Thyroxin since then. All my symptoms have come on very suddenly so a bit of a shock. However I realise now I should of had blood test last Sept. My report from Endercrinologist was all in Spanish as I live in Spain now hence the confusion

This sounds very hormonal.Did you have your ovaries removed with your hysterectomy?

Lack of estrogen causes exactly what you are describing. Dread, fear, anxiety, panic, tearfulness, doom. The symptoms can be horrific.

Depersonalisation, depression, suicidal thoughts etc.

They are often worse in the morning on waking and ease throughout the day.

Are you taking any form of HRT?

i take estrogen as well as thyroxine and T3. Even if my thyroid hormones are good, if my estrogen replacement is too low I still feel all of the above. Estrogen and thyroxine are 2 separate hormones. In order to feel well they both need to be addressed.

Sorry not to reply until now. Yes I did have ovaries my removed because I have inherited the Braca 1 gene. My sister had ovarian cancer and as I have had breast cancer twice I was advised to have the hysterectomy Having HRT or any hormone replacement is not available to me. It's just the symptoms of my hypothyroidism has really taken me by surprise. I am living on my own so being able to join this site has been very helpful!

Gosh what an absolutely awful time you've had of it. I'm so sorry.

I see why you've opted for no HRT.

There are other options. Tibolone is an option available to ladies who can't take estrogen replacement. Maybe you should look into it.

Its not a hormone rather an agonist which acts on receptors in the body. Clever stuff and been around years. Many women swear by it. It's certainly worth considering because you sound as though your having a pretty dreadful time and I suspect it's not all down to lack of thyroxine.

Surgical menopause is aggressive to say the least and the symptoms can be exceptionally unpleasant.

Please google it and maybe consider asking your doctor for a trial.

Yes, I am at my very lowest when I get up. I feel like "is this it for life, I have lost myself". Yes felt dread, impending doom and fear for the future. Since starting self meds I feel less miserable. I still wake feeling awful but it passes and is slowly improving. It took a long time to get unwell and I am resigned to long term recovery. This forum is a huge part of my journey, it just helps to know I am not the only one. I hope you feel better soon.

When you say self meds are you taking Thyroxin and guessing how much take depending on how you feel. Are you taking anything else for your symptoms

You should have both Free T4 and Free T3 checked and i'll give you a link to read about these. We have many T3

receptor cells in our brain.

Thank you I will ask my Dr but this is Spain. As far as I can see from my blood results a year ago she only tested my TSH levels and various vitamins iron and minerals. If I don't get a result I will see a English Dr here instead.

Just been to my Dr here in Spain needless to say he has only done my THE levels which are 0.69 range 0.350-5.500. Last time they were 2.5. That was a year ago. Now I have every symptom under the sun and feel very unwell. I have been on Thyroxin 75mg for 15years most of that time. I am fighting a losing battle with my GP who refused to listen to my concerns, especially as I was so emotionally . I saw the Endercrinologist last April and she did my vitamin levels etc and TSH but no T3 or T4. I tried to tell him about my total hysterectomy last year but he said that the two are connected. My question is will it hurt me to up the Thyroxin by 25mg and to to take vitamin D and B1 B6 and B12 especially as I am semi disabled with small fibre neuropathy and I know the B vitamins are important for my nerves. I feel so ill at the moment and my daughter gets married end July and I need to walk her down the isle. At the moment I won't have the energy to do so.

I'm taking NDT plus vitamin a and herbal supplements. As I've increased slowly my mood is much more even and hopeful. It was tough at first but the feelings do pass.

I was advised to take vitamin D. I told the endocrinologist that I was taking Pharmaton which she said was fine. Not to take more vitamin D as well. I think now is the time to review it all.

Don't worry it can be a normal feeling 'dread' as our hormones aren't working as they should do. It can be quite scary but probably 'normal' for those not yet on an optimum. If you are 'extra' cold you need a new blood test.

It should be the earliest possible, fasting (you can drink water) and if you take hormones allow a 24 hour gap between the last dose and the test and take afterwards.
