T3 - Thybon

Hi all,

I have a question - why do I regularly pick up Thybon from the pharmacy when all this trouble is about Concordia? Can't everyone be prescribed Thybon? I don't see what the problem is as I assume Thybon is cheaper seeing as it's from Germany?

Please can someone shed some light on this for me?

Thanks!

Phone your pharmacy and ask. It would be interesting to know the answer, i.e. cost of UK T3?. As other pharmacies could also source Thybon. It might even be better. If it is reasonable then it may stop areas prohibiting T3.

Thanks Shaws. Will get in touch with them on Tuesday. I am intrigued!

Sounds like someone, somewhere, is applying a bit of intelligence.

Usually, a prescription should be dispensed with one of the UK licensed products, unless there are special reasons such as intolerance or shortage of the product.

Be careful you don't make it sound like a complaint! :-)

Oh I promise I'm not complaining! I'm so grateful to have been prescribed T3 and am worried that one day it might be taken off me but I just didn't understand and thought I was missing something. So do you think someone is doing something they shouldn't? Even though it is the most cost effective thing to do. I should keep quiet then really oughtn't I and let them get on with it. I don't want to rock the boat.

So is Thybon unlicensed in the UK?

helvella profile image

Absolutely not licensed in the UK. The only liothyronine tablet that is licensed is Mercury Pharma's exceedingly expensive product.

Ok. I thought it might help other people but obviously not. Should I delete my post?

I think it is very interesting that someone is getting Thybon - without it being specifically prescribed.

I say, leave it. People should know what is possible.

Helvella, I'm a bit worried now. I feel fine but is it safe to take if it's unlicensed? I assume the German thyroid patients are ok.

Precisely! It is licensed - just not by the MHRA. But the MHRA and the German equivalent are pretty much equal.

A licence does not, in itself, make a medicine better or worse!

There are people who would walk the legnth of the country to your pharmacy to get Thybon rather than Mercury Pharma - some (but not all) much prefer it.

Well I'm very grateful to be getting it. Thanks so much for your advice. I don't think I will contact them after all. Perhaps best to let them get on with it! If it saves the NHS money then it can only be a good thing 🙂

My chemist told me he was surprised I was still getting t3. (chemist is getting thybon for me) Apparently one other person in area getting thybon - private prescription - reckons it is costing her over £200 one packet. (I take 50mcg pd) Not sure how much on NHS - will ask as due to pick some up next week.

I've just phoned my pharmacist I always get my T3 from. Mainly to ask if he's got a supply of my T3 in stock. No as it's so expensive. Then I asked if he can fill my prescription with T3 from elsewhere. Answer No... due to rulings.

I am importing Thybon from Germany via private orescription, first time on T3 but Getman standards very high and they were vey " professional" 10 £ a month instead of 250. Only do with prescription

Sarahpk Do you have to get a private prescription or is the green GP prescription ok?
