Hi,

New Member, been diagnosed as underactive thyroid but wasnt given readings... I went for a health check and at results was told that I due to overactive thyroid was required to take tablets for the rest of life... and a further blood test was required in 3 mths which is at the end of May.. have no idea of levels etc etc.. and my mind boggles when looking on the internet... the one thing I have gone back with though and seeing a specialist next week is this came from a health check but since Jan and since the flu I have had a sore throat and it hasnt gone away.. my doctor says it isnt related... All I can say is since Dec and having a supposed "viral infection" I have been diagnosed with an underactive thyroid and also no explanation of why have a nightly sore throat!!!

What medication have you been given and what dose ?

Blood results would be helpful. You have a legal right to see them. You can go to your doctor and request a print out from reception. Or alternatively phone reception and ask for the results over the phone. If you do that, you will also need the ranges.

Your results will comprise of TSH ( thyroid stimulating hormone ) and t4 - one of the main thyroid hormones

For example ( my recent results )

TSH - 5.9 range - 0.35 - 5.7

T4 - 13.4 range - 10 - 20

Ranges vary so you will need to ask what ranges the lab used.

Regards your sore throat. It's not something I have personal experience of, relating to my thyroid problem. Hopefully someone else can help you with that.

Is that underactive Thyroid you have then and not overactive?

I would see GP and ask for an Ultrasound scan of your Thyroid . Your GP can send you for this.

I did.

The morning after my scan my GP made urgent referal to Endocrinologist.

If GP refuses then ask him what exactly is your diagnosis?

How do you ontain test results in your practice? We phone after 10 am and go through to an extension. You can ask for the details and normal ranges and write them down. Or you could call in and ask for printed copy.

Also make a list of all your symptoms. Have you put on unexplained weight. t tiredness, constipation, hairloss?

Your diagnosis could be Hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis & Hypothyroidism. You have a right to ask what your diagnosis is.

1) Get copies of all blood tests results.

2) Write a list of all your symptoms.

Then see the most agreeable GP in the practice. Viruses have

Viruses have a short life.

You can also ask to be referred to ENT for a nasendoscope as you are concerned about the pain in your throat every day for four months particularly athe night. Be firm with GP, keep pestering them . I went around them all till I got all the tests I needed.

Have you any lumpiness, swallowing problems occasionally? Have you had occassional acid taste in your throat?

So please ask for Ultrasound scan of your Thyroid. If refused say that you want to see Endocrinologist urgently if refused then ask if your Thyroid Antibodies have been tested and what is your diagnosis. Remember to ask for ENT referal for throat complaint. You may have to make several appointments but keep at it. And mention ALL your symptoms. x

It could be related to a lot of things. If you have Hashimoto's (the main cause of hypothyroidism) feeling a fullness in the throat is a common symptom. Sometimes it subsides with medication sometimes it doesn't. For me personally it tends to come and go, it's only bad when I'm not healthy (not following my diet, eating junk, getting sick).

It's pretty important for yourself to get the result from your doctor. Without those results we can't really inform you about anything. There are a lot of different things that cause hypothyroidism, and different degrees of severity.

One thing which I recommend right away is to get these vitamins tested: B12, vit D, ferritin, iron, folate. These are often deficient or low in hypo's. An optimal reading in this vits is required fo hypo's to feel well. So if you can post all these results to this forum and we can help you get to the bottom of this. As well as GORD I have:

Laryngophayngeal Reflux. This is when the stomach acid rises above the oesophagus into the throat. I only had rare occassional of taste of acid in throat. But the rising stomach juices/acid pool in the throat at night. I also had night cough.

I asked GP for nasendoscope after seeing it perfomed on the local evening news. He referred me to ENT. I had acid damage to the Arytenoids which was seen through the nasendoscope. A later Barium Swallow xray revealed a Posterior Prominence on the Cricopharyngeus. The treatment was high dose Zoton Fastab.

I also have severe C-spine degeneration.

With the throat conditon I also had sharp pain when singing and sometimes after talking.

Yes Tiger I have a sore throats and often loose my voice a bit.

I'm Hashi Hypo with regular biopsies on Thyroid nodules. Left side atrophied and Ride side has the nodules (common with Hypo)
